Educational Leadership and Policy Studies

There are three degree-granting programs in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. Each of the three programs offers the M.Ed. and Ph.D. degrees. In addition, the Ed.D. is offered by the EACS program. Each program has its own admissions process, course offerings, and faculty.

The organizations that lead in the 21st century and beyond must be flexible, transformative, and responsive. OU prepares college of education graduate students, regardless of program, to work in a range of settings, such as education institutions, non-profits, small businesses, and even large corporations.

Adult and Higher Education

 

The EDAH graduate program offers degrees (Master's and Ph.D.) specifically designed to prepare students to address significant post-secondary issues facing our community, society, and nation. The program focuses on continuing, higher, and professional education; training and development; higher education, student affairs, intercollegiate athletic administration; and institutional research. Our graduates assume teaching, administrative, research, and leadership positions in a variety of non-profit and for-profit organizational settings, including colleges and universities, governmental agencies, social service and learning centers, and corporations.

Educational Administration, Curriculumn and Supervision

The EACS Program offers a Master's, certification (principal and superintendent) and Doctoral programs (Ed.D. and Ph.D.) designed to empower professionals to lead transformative change and drive meaningful impact in educational organizations. Designed for ambitious educators ready to elevate their careers, these programs equip students with the leadership strategies, policy knowledge, and practical tools needed to shape the future of learning environments. In-person programs are located on both the Norman and Tulsa campuses.

Educational Studies

The Interdisciplinary Educational Studies (EDS) graduate program (Ph.D and M.A.) centers the critical study of education as a cultural, political, historical and ethical practice. Students examine education across its many forms – formal and informal, local and global, past and present – through individualized, inquiry-driven study that interrogates white settler colonial logics and dominant educational paradigms around learning and teaching. In collaboration with an advisor and guiding committee, students design personalized programs of study shaped by their interests, commitments, and aspirations. EDS encourages engagement across departments, including Women’s and Gender Studies, Native American Studies, African American Studies, History, Sociology, and more – fostering expansive transdisciplinary thinking. Rooted in a relational, liberatory approach to education as praxis, EDS cultivates a collaborative community of scholar-practitioners committed to reimagining the purposes and possibilities of education. Faculty offer close mentorship and model accountable, community-engaged approaches to research, teaching, and advising. In all its dimensions, EDS is a space for exploration, transformation, and collective responsibility in and through education.

“I am Cherokee and Hawaiian/Filipino, born in Oklahoma but raised far from my Tribe. I grew up as a rez girl on the Navajo Reservation, yet I wasn’t Navajo. I was always similar but never quite the same. That experience shaped me. It taught me to embrace my identity, even when it didn’t fit neatly into the expectations of others. I listened to my grandmother, absorbed everything I could about my history and culture, and learned to carry myself with pride.

Growing up, I was never supposed to succeed. The odds were stacked against me, but I refused to accept that. I became a fighter—a person who was ready to prove others wrong and stand my ground. That determination carried me into my Doctoral program at the University of Oklahoma in the EDAH program. I thought I’d have to fight just as hard there, but something unexpected happened: I was embraced.

As a graduate student at OU, I felt seen, heard, and valued. My professors and fellow doctoral students didn’t just tolerate my unique perspective—they celebrated it. Through that program, I didn’t just grow academically—I grew as a person. I found courage and strength. I developed sharp writing and research skills, honed my presentation and articulation abilities, and, most importantly, built friendships and a sense of family.
