Professor Sabina Vaught, principal co-chair of the Carceral Studies Consortium hosted by Gibbs College, is leading a Feminist Studies Reading Group for 15 incarcerated teenaged girls this fall.
Sponsored by the Oklahoma Office of Juvenile Affairs, the goal of this reading group is to help create a collective learning and solidarity community through feminist and womanist principles.
Vaught is modeling this reading group after feminist studies groups she previously developed and led at a Massachusetts Correctional Institution in Framingham, Massachusetts. These reading groups were offered in both short term (eight week) and long term (six month) settings. The eight-week options were co-facilitated by an undergraduate and a graduate student, who were trained by Vaught.
For the incarcerated girls being held at a treatment facility outside of Oklahoma City, this fall’s Feminist Studies Reading Group aims to help them connect their individual experiences and identities to larger systems of thought, culture, and power.
