Dean of the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture Hans E. Butzer, AIA LEED AP, and his business partner Torrey A. Butzer, Assoc. AIA, were invited to speak at a University of Nevada-Las Vegas School of Architecture sponsored workshop. The event focused on the October 1, 2017, tragedy in which 58 people were killed while attending the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival in Las Vegas. Other speakers invited to the January 25, 2021, event included psychologists and survivors of the shooting.
Hans and Torrey shared their perspective on shaping, designing, and constructing memorials in an era when transparency, equity, and diversity are critical to developing a sense of belonging through place-making.
