Gibbs College of Architecture Assistant Professor Dr. Ladan Mozaffarian, in the Division of Planning, Landscape Architecture and Design, has co-authored a new book chapter with Josh Newton and Andrew Born, published in De Gruyter Handbook of the Geographies of Race.
The chapter, titled “(Re)racializing Neighborhoods for Capital Accumulation: The Racial Projects of CCIs and Innovation Districts,” examines how Comprehensive Community Initiatives (CCIs) and innovation districts—two contemporary approaches to neighborhood revitalization—intersect with historical processes of racialization, investment, and urban development. The authors explore how these initiatives can reproduce racial inequalities and advance development agendas with limited resident participation. They also discuss alternative approaches to development that center grassroots democracy and more equitable outcomes.
The publication contributes to ongoing scholarly discussions about race, urban development, and the social consequences of neighborhood revitalization. It reflects a collaborative research effort addressing the relationship between contemporary planning practices and broader structures of inequality.
