UROP

 Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

The Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP) offers financial assistance for student-driven scholarly and creative projects under the mentorship of a faculty member. This competitive program is open to all University of Oklahoma undergraduate students at the main campus and at the Health Sciences Center. UROP grants can be requested for up to $1,000. UROP recipients are expected to present the results of their research, creative activity, or work-in-progress at the Honors College's Undergraduate Research Day, a conference held in April of each year.

Students may apply for UROP either individually or as a pair. If applying as a pair, any amount awarded will be divided equally between the two applicants. UROP grants cover research expenses only, and there are two options for payment:

  1. Paid to the student as a scholarship ( in the amount reimbursing the research expenses)
  2. Paid to the sponsoring department for the purchase of specialized materials for the research project.

NEW POLICY: EACH PROFESSOR CAN SPONSOR ONLY ONE UROP PROJECT PER SEMESTER

Deadline and Timeline

The spring UROP deadline is Friday February 9 by 5 p.m. This is for research to be undertaken primarily during the Spring 2024 semester, although we understand that some projects are ongoing. Notifications are sent 3-4 weeks after the application deadline.

Application Materials

In addition to answering the informational questions within the Qualtrics system, UROP applicants will need to upload the following documents:

  • A combined PDF including your summary/abstract (max 500 words) and a detailed, itemized budget. The project summary/abstract should be written by the student and should explain specifically what the student will do during the funded period. Scientific and engineering proposals should include a statement of hypothesis and research methodology. All proposals should include a rationale, goals and objectives, and a timeline for project activities. Explain how items requested in the budget will be used. If your project is a small part of a larger project, explain that as well. See sample budgets in the link below.

  • A form filled out by the student and signed by the sponsoring professor, including their commitment to supervise the project and ensure compliance with all safety and research subject requirements (see link below to access the sponsoring professor form)

  • INCLUDE YOUR NAME ON EVERY PAGE!

Budget Policies

  • Student salary CANNOT be requested. The fund is intended to purchase equipment and/or supplies, or to reimburse essential project expenses.

  • If travel funds are requested, they must be an integral part of the research/creative activity (e.g., travel to an archive or field site). Conference travel cannot be funded with a UROP

  • You may request any amount up to $1000. It is in your best interest to provide an honest and reasonable account of the funds for the project. We reserve the right to reduce an award in order to facilitate more projects.
