GENERAL RESIDENTS' HEALTH

Each August, The University of Oklahoma welcomes over 5,000 new students into university housing spaces. These residents travel from their homes across the globe, often coming from vastly different environmental conditions than they may experience here in Oklahoma. There is often an adjustment period for new residents as they acclimate.

Below are some common factors impacting general residents’ health:

Outdoor temperature, humidity, allergens and air quality

  • The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) lists Oklahoma as one of the top five most challenging places to live with seasonal allergies. Some residents may find it more challenging to acclimate to different allergens and weather conditions since they may have never experienced them before.

Concentration of occupants

  • Residents that may be used to having a private bedroom at home will now be adjusting to living with roommates and suitemates in a smaller, more limited space.
  • For many residents, living in a residential hall with over 500 neighbors is a new experience.

Lack of rest and increased fatigue

  • Most new residents have extremely busy schedules. Attending classes, meeting obligations, working and socializing take a lot of energy and can make self-care more challenging.

Living in communal spaces and in a new environment coupled with busy schedules, academic stress and changes in diet or sleep patterns can make students more susceptible to illness. Goddard Health Center has walk in appointment options should you need to see a physician.
