The Graduate College symposium at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences showcases excellence in research and academic discourse, providing students and research fellows the opportunity to compete for grants and prizes
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center Graduate College students and postdoctoral Fellows showcased their research and oratory prowess April 1-4 in the annual competitive event, “The Graduate Research Education and Technology Symposium,” or GREAT.
“Every year, the GREAT Symposium stands as a testament to our college’s unwavering commitment to excellence in research and academic discourse,” said Anne Pereira, Ph.D., dean of the OU Health Sciences Graduate College. “As a student-led event, it not only embodies their innovative spirit of our graduate college but also underscores the profound impact of empowering our future health care leaders.”
The symposium of graduate research provides a platform for OU Health Sciences Graduate College students to showcase individual projects and gain experience communicating their importance through poster and oral presentations. This allows future health science leaders to effectively share vital information to fellow professionals and the public. Participants compete for travel grants and cash prizes.
All seven of HSC’s colleges are represented during the week in various programs. The Flash Talk Competition pits participants with a three-minute elevator pitch to a diverse and non-specialized audience. The newest addition of the symposium is the Interdisciplinary GREAT Debate, which requires participants to argue in favor of or against a pre-determined topic pertaining to the biomedical and health care arenas.
“The breadth of research presented mirrors the variety of programs offered within the Health Sciences Graduate College, showcasing the depth of talent and dedication within our community,” Pereia said.
In all, 26 participants received awards, including the Graduate Student Paper of the Year (Ramasamy Selvarani, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology), Postdoctoral Paper of the Year (Chunbo He, Oncology Science) and Flash Talk People’s Choice (Sabira Jazir, Ph.D., Biochemistry & Physiology).
