Top Hat Platform Now Provided University-Wide at No Cost to Students

March 6, 2024

NORMAN, OKLA.– In support of the constant focus on providing students with an exceptional yet affordable academic experience at the University of Oklahoma, the Provost’s Offices on both the Norman and Health Sciences campuses are excited to announce an enhanced version of a classroom resource that many students and faculty currently use. The university now has an enterprise license agreement with Top Hat, a cloud-based, student-engagement platform.

“This agreement came to fruition through a collaborative effort between the Provost’s Office, OU Information Technology, and the Student Government Association,” said OU Norman Provost André-Denis Wright and OU Health Sciences Provost Gary Raskob. “I am pleased that it will offer significant cost savings for students while enriching the learning experience. We estimate an immediate savings of $330,000 this year with the potential for continued savings in the future."

As part of the agreement, the university’s license will cover the cost of the platform for an unlimited number of courses for all faculty university-wide, eliminating the previous student-pay model.

Incorporating Top Hat into OU courses – whether conducted in-person, online, or hybrid – offers numerous advantages beyond lowering student costs. The platform provides interactive features aimed at enhancing student engagement and learning. These features allow instructors to ask students questions and receive immediate responses during class, helping the instructors assess their students’ comprehension of covered topics and facilitate prompt adjustments to optimize classroom learning. Additionally, Top Hat seamlessly integrates with Canvas for an intuitive user experience and grade synchronization.

Training sessions and workshops for instructors will be announced soon. The university’s agreement with Top Hat also includes access to their dedicated instructional design team, who stand ready to assist with developing content.
