Dr. Campbell joined the Oklahoma Geological Survey as a Petroleum Geologist in July 1985, and retired at the end of 2001. He continues to work with the OGS as Geologist Emeritus. His research interests are structural geology, tectonics, and the evolution of sedimentary basins.
He developed interests in geography, geology, and geologic processes as early as 12 years of age. Living in the southwestern US was certainly an advantage to developing such interests, and his passion for the Earth has continued to grow. Working at the OGS has provided him with a variety of challenges, and the opportunity to study a variety of geologic problems. Many of those problems have required him to learn more about certain areas of the science, and new techniques for study as well. Investigations at the OGS typically relate to real-world problems, and therein is the important intersection with human concerns.
In addition, Dr. Campbell has had opportunities to explain many aspects of geology, including energy issues, at workshops, civic organizations, schools, and responding to questions from the public. He is the author and co-author of some sixty published papers, invited papers, reports, maps, and field guides. He also was co-convener of two OGS Symposia.
Dr. Campbell was previously employed by Shell Oil Company (US), Utah Geological Survey, and West Texas A&M University. He received a BS and MS degrees in Geology (1961, 1966) from the University of New Mexico, and earned a Ph.D. at the University of Utah in 1978.
