Financial Aid

Financial Aid

Financial assistance programs are available to students who enroll in the University of Oklahoma. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for nearly all types of financial aid including federal, state, and institutional aid.

What is the FAFSA?

The FAFSA (or Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the government-provided application for need-based funds to help pay for college. OU highly recommends completing the FAFSA regardless of your family's income. Nearly 71% of OU students who applied for financial aid for the 2020-2021 academic year received some type of assistance.

The FAFSA opens October 1 each year

Families can begin completing the FAFSA starting October 1 at fafsa.gov. The earlier it is completed, the better. The FAFSA application takes less than an hour to complete for first-time filers. The FAFSA renewal process can be completed in 10 minutes. You will need the following items:

  • Social security number (or permanent resident card)
  • Prior-prior-year tax records (this is your federal income tax records from 2021)
  • ·Any W-2s you received in the past year and other documents of money earned

Suppose you (or your parents) have missed the 2021 tax filing deadline and still need to file a 2021 income tax return with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In that case, you should submit your FAFSA form now using estimated tax information, and then you must correct that information after you file your return.
