Meet Kat Henson, a Social Work student on the OU–Tulsa campus. As a first-year student, she’s new to the program, but her experience in both education and social work spans multiple schools and nonprofit organizations. She is eager to use her degree to support her career goals as a school social worker. Learn more about her academic journey below!

How was the OU-Tulsa transfer process?

It was definitely the easiest one I’ve had! At other schools, not all the classes counted like I thought they would. At OU, my transferred credits made sense and all had an equivalent.

What sparked your interest in social work?

I’ve actually worked for a nonprofit for the past three years. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, but realized that the impact I want to have is more of a social work thing. I learned that through the nonprofit, where we work with other nonprofits and in schools. That’s how I figured out I wanted to do social work, and specifically school social work.

How did you come across the social work program at OU-Tulsa?

I actually already knew that OU had a really good social work program! A few of my friends have come here for teaching and similar education degrees. I originally looked at the Norman campus, but [as a Tulsa resident] Tulsa made more sense.

How would you describe your classes so far?

The practicum has been super helpful. It’s definitely been very interactive and communicative, I would say. We have a class group chat, so…it’s been very easy to get to know people. I think 90% of our class is in all four sections together, so it’s been nice to have the same group. We're a community!
