Candace is a math educator committed to helping students succeed in higher education. Since 2008, she has taught math courses and most recently served as director of the Developmental Studies program, with a focus on supporting first-year students as they build confidence, persistence, and a sense of belonging in college. As Associate Director of the Student Learning Center, she oversees the Supplemental Instruction program and contributes to campus initiatives that expand academic support services. She is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology and her research centers on motivation and self-regulated learning. Beyond teaching and research, Candace is enthusastic about making students feel included and welcome in their campus community, both inside and outside of the classroom. Outside of work, Candace enjoys reading, live music, movies, and exploring the OKC Metro for new experiences.

The best part about working with students is watching them grow in confidence. I especially enjoy seeing students who may start the semester feeling unsure about their classes begin to recognize their own abilities and see their effort and hard work pay off. Being able to encourage creativity, growth, persistence, and confidence is the most rewarding part of my work.

My best advice for undergraduates is to remember that you don’t have to do college alone—seek out support, ask questions, and get connected with your professors and peers. College can be challenging, but you’ll find that your effort, persistence, and willingness to ask for help will make all the difference. Also, drink water and make time for sleep!
