Reading Assessment

There are no enrollment restrictions for students with an ACT reading sub-score of 19 or higher and/or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading/Writing of 510 or higher.  All incoming OU students who do not meet this threshold are required to take a reading assessment to determine whether they must take a developmental reading course before moving on to higher reading level courses.

OU’s reading assessment/placement is given through the College Board’s Accuplacer program. Accuplacer uses web-based assessments designed to evaluate student skills in reading and measure a student's reading comprehension, ability to identify main ideas, and ability to make inferences.

The reading assessment is 20 questions and is untimed, although the average time spent on an attempt is one hour.

If you have questions, please email the Assessment Center at assess@ou.edu.

Once you have taken your reading assessment, you can review your course placement below.

Your Accuplacer Reading test will be virtually proctored by the OU Academic Success Center's Assessment Center, via Zoom.  You will schedule your assessment through your New Sooner Orientation registration. If you need to reschedule your Reading Assessment, click here.

Frequently Asked Questions: English Assessment

English/ Reading Assessment

The State Regents for Higher Education require assessment in math, reading, and writing for all incoming high school students who will start at OU as first time freshmen. If you are required to take an assessment or assessment(s), it is because the institution wants to measure your readiness for course placement.

Possibly. We must have your official transcript with the final grade on file before we can make that determination. Once it is received and processed, if you no longer need to assess, the system will automatically delete your appointment and send a notification to your OU email.

If you complete an assessment and later submit concurrent or dual enrollment coursework, we will honor the higher placement, whether that comes from your assessment results or your concurrent credit.

No. Assessment is part of the registration process. If the system determines that you need to assess, you will need to schedule that assessment appointment before you can create and continue through for New Sooner Orientation registration. When do I have to complete my assessment(s)? It is best to complete your assessments as soon as possible. Your results can impact both your pre-enrollment in classes and your advising experience, so the sooner you complete them, the better. Nonetheless, assessments must be completed 3 business days prior to your scheduled New Sooner Orientation day or your orientation is subject to cancellation.

Yes. You may be able to use qualifying ACT or SAT scores to satisfy your English and/or Reading placement requirements.

  • An ACT English subscore of 19 or higher or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 510 or higher will remove the requirement to assess in English.

  • An ACT Reading subscore of 19 or higher or an SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing score of 510 or higher will remove the requirement to assess in Reading.

Your official test scores must be on file with the University of Oklahoma before we can make this determination. Once your scores are received and processed, the system will automatically update your placement requirements and notify you if an assessment is no longer needed.

If you complete an assessment and later submit qualifying test scores, we will honor the higher placement
