What is Finance?

Finance degrees study the science and management of funds. Our finance program is designed to train students to succeed in multiple career tracks, including corporate finance, investment management, commercial banking, investment banking, trading, financial analysis, financial planning, financial research, regulation, and more. In addition to the cutting-edge educational experience provided by the internationally renowned group of faculty, our program has a number of highlights that enrich your academic life and provide competitive advantages on the job market:

  • Be sure to check out the Student Investment Fund, a stock fund for which Mr. Michael F. Price provided the seed money in 1996 and which has since then been successfully managed by students.
  • Do not miss the chance to join the Finance Student Association, an important venue connecting you to employers, faculty, and fellow students to help you get involved.  Additionally, the FSA is an umbrella organization sponsor for special-interest groups like Wall Street Sooners investment banking club, Real Estate Club at OU, and more!
  • Participate in the OU/Oklahoma Bankers Association summer internship program! The internships will provide the students with a hands-on banking experience.
  • Choose among five tracks, including ones that will prepare you for the first level of the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) examination and the Certified Financial Planner examination.
  • Apply for the Price Scholar Internship, a prestigious internship that places you in New York City for the summer.
  • Add a Master of Science in Finance with just one additional year of coursework.

So, what's my degree?

A Finance student graduates with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Advanced degrees include Master of Science in Finance, Master of Business Administration, Juris Doctor/Master of Business Administration and Doctor of Philosophy. Students can also minor in Finance.

How can an OU Finance degree help me?

Finance is considered a very strong major by recruiters, even outside the finance industry. You will acquire critical skills involved in making important business decisions, skills which are valued by prospective employees. That’s one of the reasons that the finance major is one of the most popular majors, although it is considered more difficult than many other majors on campus

What courses will I take?

All business students must take FIN 2303 Business Finance at some point in their program. For Finance majors, we recommend this be taken in your sophomore year because it is a prerequisite for all other finance classes. There are four other required courses:

  • FIN 3403 Financial Intermediaries and Markets
  • FIN 3453 Financial Modeling and Analysis
  • FIN 3503 Investments
  • FIN 3603 Advanced Corporate Finance

Finance majors also must complete the following two accounting courses:

  • ACCT 3113 Intermediate Accounting I
  • ACCT 3123 Intermediate Accounting II

In addition, finance majors must take at least three upper division finance electives. Each of these courses is recommended for at least one of the tracks the department has laid out. Following a track will give you guidance as to how to choose electives. These electives include:

  • FIN 4113 Derivative Securities and Markets
  • FIN 4133 International Financial Management
  • FIN 4403 Advanced Topics in Investments
  • FIN 4413 Commercial Banking
  • FIN 4513 Financial Risk Management
  • FIN 4613 Student Investment Fund
  • FIN 4713 Fixed Income Securities and Markets

Wait, I can have a minor?

Yes, you can! Finance is a popular minor for students majoring in Accounting, Energy Management, Entrepreneurship, and Management Information Systems.

How can I get involved?

You can get involved by joining the Finance Student Association and participating in the numerous talks and events the FSA and Finance Division organizes throughout the year.

How can I study abroad?

What makes our Finance program unique?

The Student Investment Fund Class, the Finance Student Association and associated clubs, and an active Oklahoma Bankers Association and Price Scholar summer internship program make the Division of Finance a hands-on learning experience. Through a flexible curriculum, students are trained to become financial managers at major corporations and investment firms. Coursework is designed to give students a firm grasp of financial markets, investing and banking. And with just one more year of coursework, students can add a Master of Science in Finance.

The Student Investment Fund Class offers students exciting educational experiences in which they “manage” a real investment portfolio in conjunction with an advanced finance class. Participating students leave the course with a competitive edge in joining the securities industry.
