2021 International Women's Day

For more than a century, International Women's Day has celebrated women around the globe, recognizing their social, economic, cultural, and political achievements. Today and every day we recognize the incredible women from the University of Oklahoma community who are making their voices heard and positively impacting the world. This #IWD2021, read stories about a few of these changemakers - Destinee Dickson, Tavana Farzaneh, Nayifa Nihad, and some OU scientists who are influencing their respective fields.

Destinee Dickson

OU Class of 2020 | ACLU | Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
From a young age, Destinee Dickson has planned to pursue a career in politics or activism. She brought that goal to OU, where she double majored in political science and women’s and gender studies. In February, she started working at the ACLU as a National Political Advocacy Department assistant within the Liberty Division.

Tavana Farzaneh

OU Class of 2022 | Economics (Business Administration) | Norman, Oklahoma
Tavana Farzaneh began her term as Student Government Association (SGA) president in January. She and her all-woman Executive Branch are already working on some of their goals, with an overall focus of making campus a more inclusive and welcoming space.

Nayifa Nihad

Nayifa Nihad

OU Class of 2020 | Current OU Graduate Student | Malé, Maldives
As a freshman at OU, Nayifa Nihad realized she could use her passion for writing to raise awareness around issues that matter to her, including women’s rights and climate advocacy. She is focusing her master’s program research on this area, trying to raise awareness about the climate changes in her home country of the Maldives.

The International Day of Women and Girls in Science is dedicated to ending gender imbalance in STEM fields and dismantling gender stereotypes. As we celebrate all of the OU scientists who are working to solve global grand challenges through their research, meet a few of the many OU researchers, faculty members, and alumnae who are making an impact in their field.
