Career Everywhere is a term used to help articulate this fact and help hone in on this effort in the work that we do, ensuring we provide students with tailored career-related support.
Preparing students for life after graduation has always been a core promise of higher education. Today, however, the expectations students and employers place on universities are evolving rapidly. Students increasingly seek meaningful work that aligns with their values and purpose, while employers are looking for graduates who can apply knowledge in real-world settings and demonstrate transferable skills such as communication, problem solving, and collaboration.
Research increasingly shows that traditional career center models, where career services exist as a standalone resource students must seek out, are no longer sufficient. Instead, institutions that see the strongest student outcomes are those that embed career development throughout the student experience. Faculty contribute to Career Everywhere in many meaningful ways. Career Everywhere does not ask faculty to become career counselors. Rather, it seeks to support faculty in helping students recognize the value of their education and the skills they are developing, while connecting them to additional resources when appropriate. When faculty understand the career development tools and services available to students, and when they reinforce the importance of skill development, exploration, and experience, they help students make stronger connections between their academic work and their future goals.
Students’ experiences outside the classroom are a critical part of their development during their time at the University of Oklahoma. Staff across campus, whether working in student organizations, residence life, academic advising, student employment, athletics, cultural centers, or other support units, play an important role in shaping those experiences.
Many of the skills employers value most are developed through these campus interactions and opportunities. Leadership, teamwork, communication, problem solving, and professionalism are often built through student employment, involvement in organizations, participation in campus programs, and the everyday interactions students have with staff members who mentor and support them.
Career Everywhere recognizes that these experiences are not separate from career preparation: they are a vital part of it.
Staff contribute to Career Everywhere by helping students recognize the skills they are building through their campus involvement and encouraging them to reflect on how those experiences prepare them for life after graduation. Sometimes this can be as simple as helping a student articulate what they learned from leading an event, managing a project, working as a student employee, or collaborating with others on campus.
Just as importantly, staff help students navigate challenges, build confidence, and develop the professional behaviors that will serve them throughout their careers. For many students, a conversation with a trusted staff member can be the moment that helps them recognize their strengths, see new possibilities, or take the next step toward a future goal.
