On this site, "Steve" presents a reasonably detailed on-line book on the topic of search engines. Overall, this is an impressive resource as it also presents a history of the Internet, and the gets down to business on engine basics, using search queries, the best engines, all search engines and a Q and A section. Well worth looking at if you want to use Internet search engines effectively. (****)-SR

This site about plant hormones presents a valuable summary of the action of the major plant hormones: auxin, gibberellin, cytokinin, abscisic acid, ethylene, and others. The best of this site are the narrations on the history, structure and mode of action of the compounds. Chemical structures and important applications are given. Not bad for a student project of Nazmi Yaras, Middle East Technical University, Ankara, Turkey. (****)-SR

March 8, 2000 - Palynological laboratory - Pollen Service

The Palynological Laboratory of the Swedish Museum of Natural History is essentially the birthplace of modern pollen studies. This site has pages on the staff, research information (including some basic techniques, the pollen service (counts at Swedish locations), home of the journal Grana, literature from the lab, available books, education, collections, database, CD-Rom, centennial birthday page for Vivi Täckholm, collections of Gunnar Erdtman and more. March 7, 2000 - Cryptogamic Collections at the Swedish Museum of Natural History

Cryptogamic Collections at the Swedish Museum of Natural History include over 1.5 million specimens, covering essentially everything green that lacks seeds. Type material of lichens, brown algae, red algae and bryophytes are available under "collections" in searchable databases. Scanned images of specimens and labels are available for Erik Acharius' & Olof Swartz' lichen types. Sadly the cryptogam-of-the-month is not available in English! Nice cryptogam site. (****)-SR

March 6, 2000 - The Linnean Herbarium at the Swedish Museum of Natural History

The Linnean herbarium (S-LINN) at the Swedish Museum of Natural History contains pages on the Linnean types, Swedish species, Handwritings, Historical Botanical collections, information about the herbarium and about Carl Linnaeus. About 2100 of his original sheets (including type specimens) are available on the web. Images vary from full habit to some nice detail images (without a scale, but still historically impressive). Both searching and browsing options are available with modest but informative thumbnails. An interesting site, displaying types of many of the Linnaen species! (****)-SR

March 3, 2000 - Flora Danica Online

Flora Danica is a collection of folio-sized pictures of all wild plants in Denmark that was compiled between 1761 and 1874. Some 3,000 images from copper-engraved plates are available. Images are available on thumbnail images that link to half screen jpgs. This site is provided by the Danish National Library of Science and Medicine. The drawings and paintings, from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, are excellent quality and searchable. (****) -SR

March 2, 2000 - Botany 2000: Annual Meeting of BSA & Related Plant Societies

The Botanical Society of America is separately hosting its annual meeting for the first time, August 6-10, 2000. Societies Meeting Jointly with the Botanical Society of America will be the American Bryological & Lichenological Society, American Fern Society, American Society of Plant Taxonomists, International Association for Plant Taxonomy (IAPT). Links to the abstracts are available. Abstracts are electronically submitted and available moments after submission--I have to admit that programming this electronic submission site has been taking most of my attention lately! -SR

March 1, 2000 - Molecular Biology

Molecular Biology (Bio304) by Dr. A. Malcolm Campbell at Davidson College is a very online course with abundant web links on how to do molecular biology, from chemical fundamentals to email blast searches for DNA sequences. Some of the material is password protected, but what is available for free is impressive. Exams are also available at this site. (****)-SR
