The American School of Classical Studies in Athens has been running excavations in the Athenian Agora since 1931. Ninety-five years later, an OU undergraduate will be joining the team. Lily Laney (Classical Studies and Literary & Cultural Studies) has been accepted to join the highly competitive Agora Volunteer Program for Summer 2026. Select graduate and undergraduates from many institutions will participate in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork in the 'downtown' of Athens, the heart of the ancient city.
Lily participated in the OU-sponsored Pian di Mealla excavation in Umbria, Italy in Summer 2025, where — apart from digging — she quickly demonstrated her talent for archaeological illustration. With support from the Honors Research Assistant Program (HRAP), she has since gone on to illustrate and analyze numerous finds from the OU project as well as objects in the Sam Noble Oklahoma Museum of Natural History.
