Formerly a US Peace Corps Volunteer, Paul Chambers lived in Thailand for over 25 years during which time he conducted research and taught Political Science courses at Thai universities. He was also a Lecturer at Heidelberg University in Germany for three years. Currently, besides his work at the University of Oklahoma’s Department of International Area Studies (IAS), Paul is an Associate Senior Fellow at the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) – Yusof Ishak Institute (Singapore) and is the executive editor of the Taylor & Francis (Scopus) journal Asian Affairs: An American Review. He has authored or co-authored over 100 publications, including journal articles, book chapters and books. Recent publications include his books Khaki Capital: The Political Economy of the Military in Southeast Asia (NIAS, 2017) and Praetorian Kingdom: A History of Military Ascendancy in Thailand (ISEAS Publishing, 2024). His research focuses upon comparative politics (including civil-military relations), international affairs in Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand, Myanmar, and Cambodia, and he has lectured before the European Parliament and US State Department. In April 2026, Paul delivered the annual Surin Pitsuwan Lecture on Thai Politics and Society at Harvard University, speaking on civil-military relations in Thailand.
