Differentiation Tags in Canvas

What are Differentiation Tags?

Differentiation tags let instructors create and assign fully customizable, hidden sets of students to deliver specific content. Tags support personalized instruction, organization, and grading.

Why would I use Differentiation Tags?

  • Target Assignments: Assign work or materials to specific student sets using the “Assign To” feature.
  • Differentiate Instruction: Personalize learning based on academic needs, interests, or course level (e.g., graduate vs. undergraduate).
  • Track Accommodations: Discreetly tag students who need accommodations (Canvas settings for accommodations must still be applied separately).
  • Streamline Communication: Message tagged student sets without notifying the whole class.
  • Filter the Gradebook: Filter the gradebook based on tag sets.

Tags vs Groups

  • Groups: Visible to students; used for collaboration and group submissions.
  • Tags: Hidden from students; used by instructors to organize, assign, and grade individually.

Common Questions

  • Can students see tags?

No, tags are not visible to students.

  • Can I assign assignments or modules using a tag?

Yes, use the “Assign To” dropdown to select a tag. (See “how to” guides below.)

  • Can I filter the gradebook by tag?

Yes, under “Student Groups” in the gradebook filter options.
