Grade Calculation

Final grade calculations in Canvas can be setup based on points or a weighted grading system. It is important to take note of which system you have in place in Canvas so that it matches the course syllabus and student expectations.

In Canvas, the grade book is dependent upon the settings in the Assignments area of the course. It is here that you can change the final grade calculation from a points based system to weighted. By default, the grade book will use a points based system.

A graphic depicting the differences between a Points and a Weighted gradebook in Canvas. At the top is text which reads Canvas Grade Book. Below that are two boxes with vs between them. The left box shows how a Points grading system looks. There are four assignments. Papers is worth 300 points, Participation is worth 100 points, Midterm is worth 200 points, and the Final is worth 400 points. The right box shows how a Weighted grading system looks. There are four assignments. Papers is worth 40 percent, Participation is worth 10 percent, Midterm is worth 20 percent, and the Final is worth 30 percent.
