Congratulations to the 2019 Undergraduate Student Award Winners!


 

The Department of Sociology at the University of Oklahoma recognizes its outstanding undergraduate students with two awards and three scholarships. The Helen Riddle Outstanding Senior award for Academic Excellence Awards is presented to a student who has demonstrated excellence in their course work. The Sociology faculty will nominate sociology majors with senior standing and winners are selected from the general sociology major and those who are pursuing emphasis in criminology. The award is made possible through the generous donation of Helen Riddle.

  • Helen Riddle Outstanding Senior - $500, Riddle Foundation Award: Alexis Barnes

The Helen Riddle Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award is presented to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated excellence in sociological research, either in the classroom or in pursuing publication. The award is made possible through the generous donation of Helen Riddle.

This year's winner is pursuing a research project that will be presented at the national conference for the Society for the Study of Social Problems in New York City this summer. She plans, with her collaborators Cyrus Schleifer and Ann Buetel, to submit this research for publication at the Journal of Work and Occupations.

  • Helen Riddle Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award - $500: Claire Riggs

The Riddle Undergraduate Scholarships are presented to a sociology and/or sociology (criminology emphasis) major with junior standing who has demonstrated excellence in the coursework, research, and service to the department. The award is made possible through the generous donation of Helen Riddle.

  • The Riddle Undergraduate Scholarships Award - $1,000: Lauren Fried
  • The Riddle Undergraduate Scholarships Award - $1,000: Elizabeth Soldner

 

The David T. Wright Memorial scholarship is given to a sociology major who are serving or have served in the U.S. military or who are planning a career in the military, law enforcement, or public service. This award is presented in honor of David T. Wright, who was killed in action in Afghanistan, while serving his country. 

 

  • David T. Wright Memorial Scholarship - $1,000: Paolo Montes

Alpha Kappa Delta (AKD) is an international sociology honor society first established in 1920. The purpose of Alpha Kappa Delta is to seek to acknowledge and promote excellence in the scholarship of sociology, the research of social problems, and other social and intellectual activities that will lead to improvement in the human condition. The University of Oklahoma's AKD chapter inducted five new members this year:  

  • Abbie Lynn Purdy
  • Emily Jane Reel
  • Lindsay Dawn Hansen
  • Felicia Rae Padilla
  • Wyatt McKay Schmitz
