Biography

I have been an Assistant Professor of Sociology since August 16, 2013. I currently teach Criminology, The System of Criminal Justice, and Juvenile Justice.

For 11 years prior to my appointment at the University of Oklahoma, I served in several research and administrative positions in all three branches of state government. From April 2001 through December 2005, I worked as a Court Operations Consultant for the Florida Supreme Court’s Office of the State Courts Administrator. I conducted research on the state’s juvenile delinquency and dependency court systems. This research often involved statistical analysis of court data for the purpose of identifying delays and deficiencies in the court system, followed by developing recommendations and tools for improvement.

From December 2005 through August 2009, I served in the Oklahoma Criminal Justice Resource Center (OCJRC), which was a small agency within Oklahoma’s legislative branch. The OCJRC collected, analyzed, and disseminated information regarding felony sentencing in Oklahoma. It also worked closely with the Oklahoma Sentencing Commission to forecast changes in the state’s prison population and to analyze the fiscal impact of legislation on the state’s corrections budget. I began my time at OCJRC as the Research Director. The Sentencing Commission subsequently appointed me Interim Director and Director of the agency. In addition to those administrative responsibilities, I served as a voting member of the Justice Research and Statistics Association and Director of the Oklahoma Statistical Analysis Center, which is the state’s designated liaison to the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics. I was also a member of the Oklahoma Criminal Justice Information Systems Task Force and the Oklahoma Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board.

In August 2009, the Oklahoma Legislature transferred the functions and personnel of the OCJRC to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI). From that time until August 2013, I served as Assistant Division Director of the OSBI’s Information Services Division. This division is responsible for the state’s criminal history record repository, Uniform Crime Reporting Program, and handgun licensing pursuant to the Oklahoma Self-Defense Act. In November 2012, Governor Fallin appointed me to the Membership Group of SEARCH, The National Consortium for Justice Information and Statistics. In that capacity, I represented OSBI and the state in national conversations regarding criminal history law and policy.
