Ron Martinez, Ph.D.

Faculty Writing Coach

Ronald Martinez

Ron Martinez is passionate about helping others develop their academic voices, which he has done for both graduate students and faculty in several universities worldwide. As assistant professor of English at San Francisco State University, he taught master's students how to develop the writing of multilingual speakers in academic settings. As an English Language Specialist for the U.S. Department of State, he has been selected to teach faculty in four different countries how they can enhance their writing for academic publication. Since 2015, he has set up centers in over ten universities that cater specifically to the academic publishing needs of researchers. In 2016, he was responsible for the creation of the Academic Publishing Advisory Center (CAPA) at the Federal University of Paraná in Brazil —the first center of its kind in South America. Between 2016 and 2021, Ron was also founding director of that center, which in that period helped over 2,000 students and faculty get their research published in top-tier journals and by renowned book publishers. In 2020, he worked together with the U.S. Embassy in Brazil and an important science funding agency in that country to create the Academic Writing and Research Development (AWARD) program that serves a total faculty population of over 10,000. Between 2017-2022, he was responsible for a unique graduate course for doctoral candidates in Brazil titled "Academic Writing for Publication" that reached an average of 800 students per year from several different universities, with nearly 50% of participants attributing successful publication of their dissertation work to that class. In 2020, Ron was asked to develop a new course for U.C. Berkeley called "Writing for Academic Publication," designed to help scholars for whom English is not a primary language of academic literacy.

Dr. Martinez also brings his experience as associate editor of the journal Applied Linguistics (Oxford University Press), as well as member of numerous editorial advisory boards, to the role of Faculty Writing Coach. Moreover, Ron regularly publishes and conducts research himself in the discipline of applied linguistics. He is the author of over 50 books, book chapters and journal articles, all on subjects related to language and language education. His most recent grant-funded research projects have been supported by the British Council and Educational Testing Service (ETS), and is currently an advisor on a multinational research team funded by the Research Council of Sweden.

Ron loves talking to faculty about their research and how to best communicate that scholarship to their peers and the global academic community —an endeavor he sees as not only a profound responsibility, but also a great honor.
