Social Security Number Application Procedure

  1. Provide ISS with an original on campus employment confirmation letter. Departments must follow the guidelines here.
  2. Request a DSO letter for SSN from ISS.
  3. Call the Moore SSA Office (contact info below) for instructions on applying for your Social Security Number (SSN) during the Coronavirus pandemic. They will then tell you your next steps.
    • Please mention your visa type and employment start date. 
    • If necessary, you can request a free interpreter service for the call.
  4. Documents required by the Social Security Administration to apply for your SSN 
    • Original copy of your employment offer letter
    • Original copy of the DSO letter for SSN (created by ISS)
    • I-20 copy (an original is not required)
    • Passport
    • I-94 printout from
  5. You may be required to travel to an in-person appointment in Moore. Use the EMBARK bus service, route 144 to travel to the Moore SSA office.

Can I work while I wait to receive my SSN?

An F-1 or J-1 student may work while the SSA processes the SSN application. US employers may wish to reference the SSA fact sheet, Employer Responsibilities When Hiring Foreign Workers, which contains information on how to report wages for an employee who has not yet received a SSN.
