Electronic I-20s

The US government now allows us to electronically sign and email I-20s. If you choose to receive an electronic I-20, we will email your new I-20 to you to print. It is a valid immigration document that you can use to travel and apply for a visa. If you have questions, you can email your ISS advisor and/or review the information from the US Department of Homeland Security by checking the page titled "Electronic Form I-20 Issuance" at www.ice.gov/doclib/coronavirus/covid19faq.pdf

If you will use this electronic I-20 to travel or apply for a visa, we recommend that you print the "Electronic Form I-20 Issuance" information from the US DHS link above and carry it with you when you travel or apply for a visa.

We do not offer electronic I-20s for employment authorization or in situations where the I-20 will be sent to USCIS (like CPT, OPT, OPT STEM, Economic Hardship, and Change of Status). This is because USCIS policy requires that when the student submits an I-20 copy to USCIS that they retain the original hard copy with wet signature.

Requesting to mail I-20 to someone else

The US Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) requires our office to issue the I-20 directly to the student (or their legal guardian or F-2 dependent). We cannot issue the I-20 to a third party. If you are requesting that your I-20 be mailed to someone other than you, your legal guardian, or your F-2 dependent, ISS can contact SEVP to request an exemption.

Examples of reasons for exemptions include:

  • Students who are in countries where U.S. courier services do not operate.
  • Students who are in areas with inadequate infrastructure or services that make deliveries generally difficult or would be unsecured.

To request an exemption, please complete this form: Request to Mail I-20 to Someone Else. ISS will then submit the request on your behalf. Because these requests are being decided by SEVP, this may take about 1-2 weeks. (During the Coronavirus pandemic, this may take longer.) If you have not received a response after 2 weeks, please email iss@ou.edu to check the status of your request.
