On February 26, March 5 and March 12, 2021, the Department of International and Area Studies in the David L. Boren College of International Studies held its annual symposium. The event was themed: The Environment, Human Rights, and Democracy in Bolsonaro’s Brazil.
The symposium included plenary sessions with notable keynote speakers, and workshop sessions to discuss academic papers selected in 2020.

Terena is the first indigenous lawyer to argue — and win — a case before the Brazilian Supreme Court. He will be speaking about the environment.
Monica Benício, March 5 (10 a.m. CST, 1 p.m. BSB)
Benício is the widow of Marielle Franco — a Rio de Janeiro Congresswoman tragically assassinated in 2018 — and will be discussing human rights. In 2020, she was elected to the Rio City Council.
Kennedy Alencar, March 12 (10 a.m. CST, 1 p.m. BSB)
Alencar is a journalist who directed the BBC documentary What Happened to Brazil? He closed the symposium speaker series by tackling the subject of democracy.
Nos dias 26/2, 5/3 e 12/3 de 2021, o Departamento de Estudos Internacionais e de Área do David L. Boren College of International Studies promoverá a edição de 2021 de seu Simpósio Anual. O tema deste ano é: Meio ambiente, direitos humanos e democracia no Brasil de Bolsonaro.
O simpósio incluirá plenárias com palestrantes de destaque no cenário brasileiro, além de workshops para discutir trabalhos acadêmicos selecionados no ano passado.

Kennedy é o jornalista que dirigiu o documentário da BBC “O que aconteceu com o Brasil?” Ele encerrará a série de palestras do simpósio abordando o tema democracia.
