Voting Procedures

Voting for the Newman Prize for Chinese Literature takes place in successive rounds of “positive” elimination. In this type of eliminative voting, jurors vote for all but one of the candidates at each stage. In the first round of voting, and in each round thereafter, jurors select the name of their chosen candidates from those remaining, and the Director of the Institute for US-China Issues counts the ballots to record each round of votes. As candidates are excluded, the jury will continue voting until it narrows to one candidate, the winner.

If there are ties for elimination in any but the final two rounds, then the candidates tied will both be eliminated, thus shortening the voting by one round with each tie. Beginning with the penultimate round (i.e., when three candidates remain), however, only one candidate can be eliminated at a time.
