Cole Frates Endowed Scholarship

Cole Frates, a native Oklahoman and a member of the Board of Visitors for the College of International Studies, has a personal appreciation for international education. As a graduate student at Johns Hopkins University, Cole studied in Bologna, Italy, where he made lifelong friendships that continue to enrich his life. He fully endorses the College of International Studies’ dedication to encouraging students to participate in education abroad experiences.

The Cole Frates Endowed Study Abroad Scholarship was created with the goal of assisting OU students with study abroad. In establishing an education abroad scholarship, Mr. Frates wishes to honor is mother, Mary Frates, and his best friend and partner, Famke Janssen, by naming scholarships in their honor and promoting study in destinations important to each of them.

The scholarships carry two specific designations:

  • The Mary Frates Study Abroad Scholarship, for students studying in Latin America 
  • The Famke Janssen Study Abroad Scholarship, for students studying in Europe with extra consideration for those studying in Holland

Awards will be given on a financial need basis to qualified undergraduate and graduate students from the College of International Studies participating in OU study abroad programs. Awards are for any student pursuing a degree in the College of International Studies and are based on the studentʼs financial need.


Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be a full-time, regularly enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in the College of International Studies
  • Must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Must have demonstrated financial need
  • Applicants may not be an immediate family member of the Donor

Priority consideration will be given to:

·      For the Mary Frates Study Abroad Scholarship – Study abroad in Latin America

·      For the Famke Janssen Study Abroad Scholarship – Study abroad in Europe


Deadline:
 February 1

IMPORTANT NOTE: Any student unable to complete the program will be required to return the full amount of the award to the College of International Studies.
