Dr. Duarte develops data-driven tools, products, and solutions using artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and computational statistics. He designs, builds, implements, and refines these systems by combining high-performance and parallel computing with large, diverse, complex geospatial datasets to support real‑time or near‑real‑time decision-making.

His work focuses on applied machine-learning systems for weather and water, including hydroinformatics, remote-sensing applications, hazard-warning systems, and flash‑flood impact prediction. He currently co-leads the development of AI-based emulators for numerical weather prediction for the Warn-on-Forecast System (WoFS).
