Welcome to the network project for MIS 4223 completed by Rob McGillen. This project outlines the necessary costs to provide a new software company with an efficient, cost effective, and in-depth computer network to support business practices- including product development, marketing, sales, personnel, accounting, management, packaging, and product distribution. In meeting with the project requirements, the network consists of two LAN connected across the United States via a 3rd party network provider to establish WAN services. One LAN is located in Northbrook, IL, consisting of 25 employees on a one floor facility. This area has been identified by myself as a regional sales office providing a central U.S. location for sales staff. This area is connected to the central offices in Richardson, TX by a leased T1 line from MCI. This regional sales center utilizes a combination modem pool/laptop access for sales staff as well as dedicated office computers for in-house work. Richardson, TX is the home of the company. Here the software products are developed, tested, packaged, and shipped out to the customer base. In the central office (consisting of 4 floors), all business activities occur and all data, including products, are held. This network provides computer access for 100 staff throughout. Both networks are secured using a dual ring network configuration with a dedicated firewall/proxy server for connectivity between the offices, customers, and staff to the internet. The central office data center is also the home of the corporate Web Site and FTP Services. Supporting both locations are a DNS server in Richardson, and Cisco 7500 series routers are used to handle the high traffic load of data within the software company itself. |

Assumptions: *- Richardson is the home of the company, with over 100 employees. At this site, product is developed and shipped, as well as marketing and personnel services. Management works out of this area as well. *- Sales is performed out of the Northbrook office, where the sales representatives travel across the US using laptops to connect into the network thru Northbrook, and when in the office, an equal number of PC 's are provided. *- The company is growing and will exerience a growth in data communications needs over the next 18 months to justify the installation of Cisco Enterprise routers, a T1 leased service, and Sun Microsystems network equipment to manage the network. |
