Chapter 4  WebStudy  Distance Learning on the World Wide Web
Internet Navigator...  A Simplified Guide to Netscape GOLD

File Transfer

Almost the entire point of using the Internet (other than e-mail) is to allow you to Upload and Download Files! We are talking about "any kind of file" from word processing files..., to drawing files (both CAD and Fine Arts Images). If it can be stored in your computer..., it can be transfered on the Internet.

Remember that large files will take "a long time" to Upload and Download on some Internet connections. Keep your files "Small" (...in the order of 10K or less is always best) to keep "transfer time" to a minimum!

Some of you..., may have attached photographs to your e-mail and sent it to a friend. Well, that works just fine until your Service Providor limits e-mail files to 1 megabyte (or less)..., then how will you send your photographs? The Internet answer is to "Post" your information on an ftp Server! Ftp servers are like large electronic filing cabinets that have information stored "just like" in your computer..., but located on in a remote location.

It is important for you to learn to Download files (we suggest) from our server..., and Upload files (we suggest) to the same server!

For Practice...,
We will require that you "get" a file from the Download location..., and Upload it to the Upload location!

You will need to keep your "head in the game" to remember both passwords..., and both locations..., and keep them straight in your mind! (It is something like learning the difference between "up town" and "down town")

As you gain more experience using the Internet ..., you will notice "more and more" ftp locations that store (for example) NASA Space Images, all types of Federal, State, and Private Maps, and of course Delivery systems such as WebStudy.
