Dr. Kyprioti is the leader of the Natural Hazards Research Infrastructure Resiliency (NHIR) Lab which focuses on suggesting solutions for some of the 21st century engineering challenges using statistical computing (machine learning) methods. The NHIR group seeks to advance scientific approaches related to:

  • the efficient quantification and probabilistic characterization of natural hazards
  • the infrastructure response to such hazards quantifying the impact they have on the building environment
  • the advancement of community resilience, offering short- and long-term decision-making tools
  • the development of novel ways for infrastructure systems to become more sustainable

Coastal hazard risk estimation and mitigation, as well as infrastructure reliability and sustainability assessments, are broader topics that NHIR Lab is working on gathering expertise from across the world and establishing collaborations with institutions across the US. Our work is guided by the development of practical solutions, including the advancement of computational tools and their integration within the theoretical aspects of each problem, to help the civil engineering profession manage better natural disasters and design robust infrastructure systems.
