In terms of research, I am an experimentalist and love making things and breaking things. My focus is on developing cementitious-based materials to improve the Nation’s infrastructure, both in terms of new construction and repairing existing construction to extend its life. In particular, I focus on the combination of structural engineering and materials science in that I develop new materials and repair methods and then evaluate their impact on the full scale behavior of structural elements constructed with these materials and techniques.
In terms of teaching, after a career in industry, I returned to academia to help educate the next generation of engineers. I wanted to give back to my profession, and I love teaching. As teachers, we help students learn and discover, and there is nothing like seeing that ah-ha moment in a person’s eyes. I also work with five different student groups and, in particular, enjoy the competition teams including Concrete Canoe and Steel Bridge.
The combination of structural engineering and material science aimed at improving building and bridge structural systems, particularly in regard to sustainability and innovative materials.
