Human subjects are a vital component of many biomedical research projects. Researchers have a fundamental obligation to protect the rights and well‑being of individuals who participate in their studies. In the United States, it has been determined that the best way to ensure this protection is through prospective review of human‑subject research by a diverse group of individuals who are not directly involved in the research itself. These reviews are typically conducted by committees known as Institutional Review Boards (IRBs), which are responsible for promoting ethically sound research and safeguarding participants.

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is responsible for overseeing the ethical use of vertebrate animals in research and teaching. The IACUC reviews proposed activities involving vertebrate animals, monitors the welfare and proper care of animals housed within the institution, and ensures compliance with federal and state regulations as well as institutional policies regarding animal use. In addition, the IACUC conducts a comprehensive review of the institution’s animal care and use program every six months and submits a formal report of its findings to the Institutional Official.
