HISTORY

The University of Oklahoma’s School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, one of the largest programs in the Gallogly College of Engineering, serves more than 500 undergraduate and 140 graduate students with the expertise of 35 faculty members. Founded in 1906 as the School of Electrical Engineering, it has evolved through key milestones including the integration of Computer Science in 1972, the separation of the two disciplines in 1992, and its 1996 renaming with the launch of Oklahoma’s first Computer Engineering degree. Today, the School offers undergraduate, accelerated, master’s, and doctoral programs that combine strong engineering fundamentals with opportunities to specialize in emerging fields.

Drawing on both electrical and computer engineering, and enriched by courses in computer science and other engineering disciplines, the curriculum equips students to address complex hardware and software challenges. Research and career pathways span bioengineering, communications, computer architecture, solid‑state devices, power and RF systems, image and signal processing, instrumentation, and control systems. United by a commitment to excellence in teaching, innovative research, and professional development, the School prepares graduates to lead and innovate in meeting the technological challenges of the twenty‑first century.
