Hoods, Stoles, Cords, and Distinctions

Each college has established unique requirements for graduating With Distinction and With Special Distinction.  Distinction is primarily based on a student's grade point average.  Both the transcript and diploma carry the designation.  The student's academic records will be reviewed for anticipated distinction based on grade point average at the end of the semester prior to participating in graduation ceremonies.

Students may wear a gold hood based on this anticipated status.

Graduating with either Distinction or Special Distinction is granted once all grades have been posted and degrees have been cleared.  The final semester of academic work will be factored in and distinction will be granted, adjusted, or removed based on this calculation.

Contact your academic advisor for specific requirements and questions.

Gold academic distinction hoods can be purchased during Graduation Gear-Up or from Jostens through the Sooner Shop or online.  Gold Distinction hoods are $17.25 before tax.

Students that graduate with honors must have been accepted to the Honors College and have fulfilled the requirements outlined by the Honors College.

  • Cum Laude (3.40-3.59)
  • Magna cum Laude (3.60-3.79)
  • Summa cum Laude (3.80-4.00)

Both the transcript and diploma carry the Honors designation. The student’s academic records will be reviewed for anticipated Honors based on all academic work at the end of the semester prior to participating in graduation ceremonies. Students may wear the crimson hood based on this anticipated status.

Graduating with Honors is granted once all grades have been posted and degrees have been cleared. The final semester of academic work will be factored in and distinction will be granted, adjusted or removed based on this calculation.

Contact the Honors College Clearance advisor for specific requirements and questions.

Crimson honors distinction hoods can be purchased during Graduation Gear-Up or from Jostens through the Sooner Shop or online.  Crimson Honors Distinction hoods are $17.25 before tax.

Undergraduate students with an overall 4.0 GPA are eligible to receive a 4.0 University medallion on a crimson ribbon.

Students must have a 4.0 on all OU work and on any work transferred from other institutions, including concurrent enrollment taken during high school. They may wear the medallion during Commencement and Convocation exercises.

In addition, their names will be listed in a special section of the May graduation program, and they will be invited to attend a special 4.0 University medallion presentation.

All 4.0 medallion students are also eligible to wear the gold Academic Distinction hood or the crimson Honors hood with their gown which may be purchased for an additional fee (listed above).

Students who qualify will be notified by their college. University Events will provide information regarding the presentation. Presentations are held during the fall and spring semesters. If students are unable to attend the presentation, medallions will be mailed to you.

Students may be awarded additional stoles and cords based on their membership or participation in organizations. Please consult with your organization's president or adviser to determine if there are stoles or cords and available as well as where they can be purchased or picked up.

An OU stole is available for purchase at Graduation Gear-Up or from Jostens at the Sooner Shop or online.  The OU Stole is $25 before tax.

Each college/program utilizes different colored tassels for their graduation ceremony.  Engineering students graduating with a bachelors or masters will have an orange tassel.

Doctoral students receive a specific colored hood depending on their doctoral program.  Engineering students graduating with a PhD will have a royal blue hood.

Replacements or extra tassels and hoods can be purchased as the Jostens store in the Sooner Shop or online.
