Our mission is to help Gallogly and Mewbourne students learn and practice the skills they will need to be effective and ethical leaders now and throughout their careers.

The Jerry Holmes Leadership Program aims to influence people to make positive change through the exercise of technical expertise, collaboration, and ethical practice. The concepts introduced through the JHLP are based around the following tenets:

  • Leadership can be taught.
  • Leadership is an influence process.
  • Leadership can be exercised by anyone in an organization, regardless of position.
  • Leaders promote change and create the environment in which change can take place.
  • Management is a part of leadership, and not an oppositional concept.
  • Leadership preferences are influenced by culture.
  • There is no such thing as a “complete” leader.

These tenets shape and frame the leadership capabilities that are taught through the program. The capabilities focus on five pillars of leadership: personal development, interpersonal relationships, management and teamwork, leadership, and intercultural competence.

Develop Your Leadership Skills

JHLP provides a varies of leadership development opportunities including Distinguished Speaker days, workshops, courses, and networking events. Students have the option to further develop their leadership capabilities as Holmes Leadership Associates (HLAs). HLAs work with professional mentors to design a personal leadership development plan. They attend monthly topical meetings and other events where they hone their leadership skills, and they create a real impact as leaders within the university and surrounding communities.
