The Pride of Oklahoma
The “Pride of Oklahoma” has been supporting Sooner Spirit for over a century. The Pride includes members from over 70 different majors across campus resulting in 75% of our membership majoring in a field outside of music. Our members have an average GPA of over 3.0 and are involved in various distinguished academic programs, including National Merit Scholars, Regent’s Scholars, Dean’s List, Honors College, Eagle Scouts, Byrd Scholars, and Goldwater Scholars. The Pride of Oklahoma stands for excellence in musicianship, academics, school spirit, and commitment to the role in our surrounding community.
A Century of Tradition
The Pride of Oklahoma Marching Band was founded in 1904, even before Oklahoma achieved statehood. What began as a small student pep band has grown into one of the nation’s most recognized collegiate marching bands. For more than 120 years, the Pride has carried the spirit of Sooner Nation across Owen Field and far beyond.
Academic and Musical Excellence
The Pride is home to students from more than 70 different majors across the university. Over three-quarters of its members pursue non-music degrees, bringing a rich variety of talents and perspectives to the ensemble. With an average GPA above 3.0, the band exemplifies the balance of academic achievement and artistic commitment.
Where Tradition Meets Innovation
The Pride is both a guardian of OU’s most beloved traditions and a leader in creating fresh, dynamic performances. From timeless songs like “Boomer Sooner” and the “OU Chant” to innovative halftime productions, the band bridges past and present with every show. This spirit of tradition and creativity ensures the Pride’s place as a centerpiece of the Sooner experience.
A Band That Makes History
From unforgettable game days to national recognition, the Pride has a legacy of shaping moments in OU athletics and beyond. In 1983, the band played “Boomer Sooner” nearly 300 times during the Bedlam rivalry, inspiring a comeback win and cementing a story still shared today. That same passion and determination continue to define the band’s presence at every performance.
National Recognition
In 1987, the Pride received the Sudler Trophy, often called the “Heisman of collegiate marching bands.” This award is given only to programs that demonstrate sustained excellence in musicianship, marching precision, and overall contribution to the college band tradition. The honor reflects the enduring impact and reputation of the Pride on the national stage.
The 2025 Pride
This season, the Pride of Oklahoma marches with 340 dedicated student musicians. Their collective sound and energy bring unmatched excitement to game days in Norman and on the road. Each member contributes to a unified tradition that inspires fans and alumni across the country.
