Audition Check-In

  • Check in outside the Choir Room (Room 128B) in Catlett Music Center
  • Please arrive 10-15 minutes before your scheduled audition time

What to Expect at Your Audition

The audition will consist of two components: 1) performing a prepared solo and 2) sight-reading.

Prepare one selection that best demonstrates your voice. Appropriate choices include:

  • art song
  • short operatic aria
  • classical musical theatre song

If you do not have a prepared selection, you will be asked to sing a familiar song or hymn, such as "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" or "Amazing Grace."

Please note:

  • Because of the number of auditions, the faculty panel may stop your performance before the selection is finished.
  • Your solo does not need to be memorized
  • An accompanist will be provided. Please bring clear, legible sheet music in a three-ring binder for the pianist.

Following your solo, you will complete a sight-reading assessment.

During this portion:

  • You will perform 1 or 2 exercises of increasing difficulty.
  • You will have a brief study period before each example.
  • You may sing using solfège, numbers, a neutral syllable, or another system that is most comfortable for you.

Sight-reading is one of several factors considered in choir placement. Your performance helps the faculty determine the ensemble that is the best fit for you, but it does not determine whether you will be accepted into a choral ensemble.

Frequently Asked Questions

Students accepted into an ensemble in the Fall semester remain in that ensemble for the Spring semester and do not re-audition unless requested by the faculty. Spring placement auditions are offered for students who are new to the university or seeking to join the choral program midyear.
