Caleb Westby's ballet Cathedrals of Stones will be premiered October 17, 2019 at 10:30am in the Brackett Theater. This project was a collaboration with the OU School of Dance and the World Literature Today publication. Congratulations, Caleb!

Composition Students
Congratulations to OU School of Music composition students Ray Zepeda, Jacob Frost, Caleb Westby, Christopher McLaughlin, Joshua Tomlinson, Zachary Daniels, and Hayden Iskander! These students were recently selected to participate in a composer’s exchange recital hosted by the University of North Texas. They will travel to Denton to have their works performed on February 3rd and 4th by students at UNT and will then subsequently host UNT’s winning composers in a recital of our own on February 11th. While visiting Denton, OU’s composers will be invited to participate in master classes, discuss their music, and receive feedback from the UNT composition faculty.

The recording Quadrants, Vol. 2, which includes Dr. Lamb's composition "Lamentations," has been recommended for submission to the GRAMMY AWARD nominating process, in the Producer of the Year-Classical category. Congratulations, Dr. Lamb!

Dr. Kostas Karathanasis
OU Composition Professor Dr. Kostas Karathanasis just returned from Beijing, China, where he attended the annual conference of the Musicacoustica/International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music. Dr. K represented the Hellenic Electroacoustic Music Composers Association at the General Assembly of ICEM, performed a curated concert of their music, and participated in the jury of the Musicacoustica Composition Contest for Mixed Media pieces.

DMA composition student Chelsea Williams has been selected as a finalist in the Instrumental Chamber Music student division of the American Prize in Composition! The American Prize in Composition recognizes and rewards the best American composers of works for orchestra, chorus, concert band, chamber ensemble, pops, or theater music.

Anthony Conroy
Congratulations to Anthony Conroy! Anthony won 1st Place in the Young Artists division of the national MTNA Composition Competition! Anthony's winning piece, "Only The Weak Get Burnt Out" will receive a performance at the national MTNA finals in Orlando, Florida later this spring.

Zachary Daniels’ piece, Free Flute, was recorded by flutist Robin Meiksins as part of her “365 days of flute” project.  This project, in which Meiksins collaborated extensively with living composers, is noteworthy in its use of online video as a performance medium.  You can watch a video of her performance of Zach’s piece at this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zosRNC1sr0s&feature=youtu.be

Dr. Kyle Vanderburg (DMA 2014 | Professor of Music) has accepted a position at North Dakota State University as Lecturer of Music. His duties include teaching music theory and music entrepreneurship. He will also advise on technology.

Ben Huddleston (B.M. student)  won the 2017 Earth Day Orchestral Writing Competition. This contest, hosted by the Enid Symphony Orchestra, is about promoting new orchestral music with an “Earth-Bound” theme. Ben won with his Symphony in four movements based on the four elements: Earth, Wind, Fire, Water. Bravo, Ben! The premiere, and subsequent second performance, are to take place later this month.

Ben Huddleston has been chosen as the recipient of the 2016-2017 Helene C. Lotinville Student Prize in the Fine Arts

This prize recognizes “single merit in the performances of undergraduates of Junior standing in the College of Fine Arts at the University of Oklahoma to encourage the pursuit of their chosen art form for its lifetime rewards and to match the performance of those who have gone before.”
