Boomer Brass Bash

Join us for a day of brass music on campus at the University of Oklahoma School of Music! We will have world-renowned guest artists, Scott Leger and Ryan Gardner, on campus giving performances and masterclasses, plus those that attend will also get the chance to play with Oklahoma’s premier brass band, the Frontier Brass Band! Along with all of that, those that attend will also get the chance to work with the OU brass faculty, participate in a fun scavenger hunt, and develop connections with many brass players from Oklahoma and the surrounding states!

Complete the form below to register and pay. For participants who will be under the age of 18 on January 31, 2026, a minor release form will be included as part of the registration form.
You can pay with credit card while registering ($30 if paid before 6pm on January 31). Alternatively, you can pay at the door via credit card, cash, or check ($35).
In order to receive a T-shirt, you must register and pay in full by end of day Thursday, January 15.

All events will take place in Catlett Music Center on the OU Campus. You can park in the covered garage south of the building and enter via the main entrance on the east side of Catlett.

From Houston, TX, Scott Schiffer Leger is a soloist, teacher, and orchestral horn player currently performing in the Louisville Orchestra as Assistant Principal/Third Horn. Prior to joining the Louisville Orchestra, Scott performed four seasons as a horn fellow in the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, FL, and held the position of Principal Horn of the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra in Ithaca, NY. In addition, he has performed with The Florida Orchestra, and Omaha and South Dakota symphonies as a substitute musician, and has received fellowships to spend his summers at a variety of music festivals including the Tanglewood Music Center, National Repertory Orchestra, Norfolk Chamber Music Festival and National Orchestral Institute.
As a soloist, Scott has performed concerti with the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra and New World Symphony, and in the 2020-21 season, premiered a new arrangement of Eleanor Alberga’s The Shining Gates of Morpheus for horn and string orchestra with New World. Also, Scott has competed in international competitions, most recently winning the New World Symphony Concerto Competition with Aaron J. Kernis’ “Legacy” Concerto for Horn, Strings, and Harp, receiving Second Prize in the University Division of the International Horn Competition of America, and receiving an Honorable Mention in the Woolsey Concerto Competition for his performance of Oliver Knussen’s Horn Concerto.
Scott maintains an online presence as an artist and educator producing content for his YouTube channel, Instagram and TikTok pages. Under the username @scottlegerhorn, he serves an audience of over 50,000 accounts, and has created over 1,000 videos, garnering tens of millions of views. As a producer, Scott presented over 20 concerts for the New World Symphony’s popular “Live from our Living Room” series, and also produced “Spectral Sounds,” a concert series exploring the origins of spectral music, where he also was featured as a soloist in Tristan Murail’s rarely performed work memoire/erosion for solo horn and nine instruments. He enjoys using the internet to build classical music audiences and hopes to build a platform to inspire horn-players and musicians of all ages to enjoy their craft.
Scott completed his master’s degree at the Yale School of Music under the direction of William Purvis in 2018. He received his bachelor of music degrees in music education with certification and music performance at Southern Methodist University, with minors in music theory and mathematics, in the studio of Gregory Hustis.

Dr. Ryan Gardner is the Associate Professor of Trumpet at the University of Colorado Boulder.
Originally from Santa Monica, California, Dr. Gardner received his Bachelor of Music from the Eastman School of Music with highest distinction, his Master of Music from Rice University – Shepherd School of Music, and his Doctor of Musical Arts from the Manhattan School of Music. While in New York, he worked with former principal trumpeter of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Mark Gould, and the former second trumpet player of the New York Philharmonic, Vincent Penzarella. Dr. Gardner’s thesis is based on Penzarella’s pedagogical techniques and philosophies, which include innovative ideas on breathing, air usage, and brass playing, as well as performance psychology.
Dr. Gardner has been teaching students for more than a decade. Prior to his appointment at the University of Colorado Boulder, Dr. Gardner served as Associate Professor of Trumpet at Oklahoma State University, where he was the recipient of the 2017 Board of Regents Distinguished Teaching Award, the 2016 Wise-Diggs-Berry Award for scholarly excellence, the 2014 Distinguished Professor of Music Award, and the 2013 Junior Faculty Award. Dr. Gardner also taught High Brass and directed the Jazz Ensemble at the University of Arkansas – Fort Smith. In New York, Dr. Gardner enjoyed a successful free-lance and teaching career. He held faculty positions at the Manhattan School of Music Precollege, Third Street Music Settlement, Music Conservatory of Westchester, Greenwich House Music School, and Meyer London School, as well as at the Manhattan School of Music Summer Camp.
Under the direction of Dr. Gardner since 2011, the Oklahoma State University Trumpet Studio is one of the most visible and distinguished trumpet studios in the country. Within the last five years, Dr. Gardner’s students have won every collegiate division at the National Trumpet Competition including the Undergraduate Solo Division twice (2017, 2018), the Graduate Solo Division (2016) and the Ensemble Division four times (2014, 2015, 2016, 2018). They have performed to standing ovations and rave reviews at five International Trumpet Guild Conferences where his students have also won first place in both the Solo and Orchestral Excerpts competitions. Graduates from the OSU studio go on to study at prestigious graduate schools, to teach at outstanding high school programs and to play professionally in orchestras, brass quintets and military bands.
Dr. Gardner, outside of his work at the University, maintains his private studio and additionally gives master classes and lectures internationally while continuing to perform.
As an orchestral performer, Dr. Gardner has played with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Kansas City Symphony, the Honolulu Symphony, the Charleston Symphony, the Rochester Philharmonic, the Tulsa Symphony, the Tulsa Opera, the Tulsa Ballet, the Fort Smith Symphony, the New World Symphony, the Spoleto Festival Orchestra USA, the Music Academy of the West Orchestra, the Aldeburgh Festival Britten-Pears Orchestra in England, and the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland, directed by James Levine. He has also performed in many prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall, Symphony Space, Merkin Concert Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, Alice Tully Hall, and the Palau de la Musica Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. Dr. Gardner continues to have an active orchestral performing schedule. He plays principal trumpet with the Distinguished Concerts International Orchestra in New York City and is a member of the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas and the Artosphere Festival Orchestra.
Dr. Gardner also stands out as an avid chamber musician and soloist. Ensembles of note are the Three-Fifths Trio, the OSU Brass Trio, the OSU Brass Quintet, the Eastman Brass Quintet, the Rochester Philharmonic Brass Quintet, the Houston symphony Brass Quintet, and the Seventh Partial Brass Quintet, as well as the new music ensembles Alarm Will Sound and Crash Ensemble. Dr. Gardner has also performed with Broadway touring shows including Young Frankenstein and The Three Phantoms. As the Concerto Competition winner in trumpet at the Eastman School of Music and the Music Academy of the West Brass Ensemble Competition, Dr. Gardner soloed with both the Eastman Wind Orchestra and the Music Academy of the West Brass. He has also been a featured soloist with the Southeast Symphony, OSU Symphony Orchestra and most recently with the OSU Wind Enesmble.
Dr. Gardner has been privileged to work with artists such as Ray Charles, Doc Severinson, Wayne Bergeron, Lenny Pickett, Mark Inouye, Don Green, Allan Vizzutti, the Canadian Brass, Michael Tillson-Thomas, Esa-Pekka Solonen, and David Zinman, to name a few. He can be heard on the Naxos, Mark Records, and BX Entertainment labels and is a Bach performing artist and clinician. His first album, On Track, has been lauded as having a velvety tone that never loses roundness, strength and technical skills, and playing with all the feeling we want to hear (American Record Guide). His newest album, Sempiternal Songs, features new music and arrangements for trumpet and harp and will be released in October 2018.
Holding memberships with professional associations, Dr. Gardner actively participates with the International Trumpet Guild, College Music Society, and National Associaton of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, as well as the National Trumpet Competition. In 2010, Dr. Gardner was honored for his philanthropic work as Spotlight Artist of the Year by Music for Autism. He is now the Artistic Coordinator for Music for Autism, programming music nationally for those with autism and their families, and most importantly, helping raise awareness and advocating for those with autism. Dr. Gardner also serves on the Board of Directors for the International Trumpet Guild since 2016.
Dr. Gardner is indebted to all of his main trumpet teachers: Vincent Penzarella, Mark Gould, Marie Speziale, James Thompson, Boyde Hood, and Paul Salvo. He is thankful to have had additional studies with Adolph “Bud” Herseth, Jens Lindemann, Ryan Anthony, Mark Niehaus, Laurie Frink, Doug Prosser, Michael Sachs, Mario Guarneri, Joe Burgstaller, Ed Carroll, Thomas Smith, and Per Brevig.

The Frontier Brass Band was founded in the Spring of 2014 and it draws its members from the Oklahoma City Area including brass faculty from the local universities as well as freelance musicians, area band directors and community members. The musicians of FBB have performed with professional orchestras, touring Broadway shows, and jazz bands in addition to recording on Grammy-nominated and Grammy Award-winning albums. FBB is committed to celebrating the unique British brass band genre and takes a leading role in the community to help raise arts awareness. Frontier presents four eclectic concerts each season performing a wide range of styles and genres and has collaborated with artists such as Vince DiMartino, Wiff Rudd, Greg Wing, Brian Bowman and more. The band has performed three times at the International William Adam Trumpet Festival as well as performances for the Oklahoma Music Educators Conference, Oklahoma Bandmaster’s Association Summer Conference, and regional International Trumpet Guild and International Tuba Euphonium Conferences.
