Melanie Wilderman is a Gaylord College alumna with a B.A. and M.A. in journalism. She has worked in newspapers as both a reporter and designer and began teaching as an adjunct in 2004 for the Gaylord College as well as Oklahoma City Community College and Oklahoma State University. In 2005 she was hired as an instructor of mass communication and adviser to the student newspaper at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. She was honored with the John Sheffield Teacher of the Year award there in 2009, and she was also honored state-wide in 2012 as the SPJ Oklahoma Chapter Teacher of the Year shortly before coming back to Gaylord College as full-time faculty in 2013 where she teaches writing for media and multimedia journalism classes, among others. 

Wilderman has stayed active as a freelance writer for several Oklahoma publications, including Oklahoma Living, Luxiere Oklahoma and Norman Transcript Magazine. She has also written several stage plays that have been produced in the Oklahoma City area as well as many award-winning short film scripts. She was honored with the Randal Greenland Screenwriter of the Year award at the 2019 Austin Revolution Film Festival.

She completed an Ed.D. in 2017 at Oklahoma State University in the Higher Education Leadership & Administration program. Research areas of interest include, scholastic and collegiate journalism education, service learning, and community journalism. She and her husband, Ted Satterfield (a Gaylord MPW alumnus and occasional co-writer) reside in Norman.

Dr. Wilderman is the recipient of the 2018 Owen Kulemeka Diversity Award
