Rick Schultz is the Support Specialist and Fabrication Technician for the Creative_Making Lab. Rick supports the lab team with a wide breadth of fabrication and creative experience, alongside over a decade of expertise in project coordination and management.
Rick earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Oklahoma, where he began his journey as a student employee for the University Libraries’ upcoming Digitization Lab. After transitioning to permanent staff, he significantly increased both the accuracy and output of digital imaging for primary source and rare special research collections, focusing on open access and preservation. Notably, his work included digitizing renderings and film slides from the American School of Architecture collections for the Renegades exhibit and the accompanying publication, Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture.
As an artist, Rick explores the conflict between Lowbrow Art and Fine Art, "elevating" what is institutionally considered trite as an act of rebellion against the traditional art world. His passion for motorcycling inspires work that examines the relationship between the industrially manufactured and natural worlds, visually and narratively composing the contradictions inherent in that relationship.
In the Creative_Making Lab, Rick strives to support students’ passion and creativity. He encourages a DIY ethic and communal support within an environment that strictly prioritizes the safety of oneself and others.
