PhD Student Receives ACCE National Housing Endowment Scholarship

We are pleased to announce that our Ph.D. student, Rafael Hernandez, has been awarded the prestigious American Council for Construction Education’s National Housing Endowment Scholarship for the 2025-2026 academic year. The National Housing Endowment is a philanthropic branch of the National Association of Home Builders.

Telesis is the student-led journal at the University of Oklahoma Gibbs College of Architecture. The Telesis team is considering the theme of “DESIGN_LESS” in its forthcoming issue (Vol. VIII). We invite you to contribute your work–design proposals, essays, stories, poetry, art, or other media–to this exciting publication until November 14, 2025. City of Shawnee, Pottawatomie County, and University of Oklahoma Awarded Grant for Safe Streets Action Plan

The City of Shawnee, in collaboration with Pottawatomie Go, and the University of Oklahoma (OU), has been awarded a $172,264 planning grant for the 2024-25 period. This grant, provided by the U.S. Department of Transportation, will be used to develop a comprehensive Safe Streets Action Plan aimed at enhancing the safety and infrastructure of Shawnee’s streets.

Eco-Sooner Team Wins Top Honors at Global Sustainability Competition

A team of graduate students from the University of Oklahoma Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture claimed a significant victory April 27, earning top honors in the Multi-Family Housing Division of the international BuildingNEXT competition, held at the U.S. Department of Energy’s laboratory in Golden, Colorado.

On April 18, 2025, the Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture hosted its annual Graduate Student Showcase, a celebration of research, design innovation, and creative exploration across all graduate programs within the College. The event transformed Gould Hall into a vibrant exhibition of ideas where students shared their work with faculty, peers, and the broader community.

Salma Akter Surma, a Ph.D. student in Gibbs College’s Planning, Design and Construction program, has been awarded the Nancy L. Mergler Dissertation Completion Fellowship for the 2025–2026 academic year. This competitive fellowship, awarded by the OU Graduate College, supports outstanding doctoral candidates in the final stages of their dissertation research.

Dr. Suchi Bhattacharjee, Dr. Chie Noyori-Corbett, and Ph.D. candidate Salma Akter have collaborated on a chapter titled “Sheltering Hope: Navigating the Nexus of Refugee Housing Conditions and Well-Being”, featured in the book “Migration and Forced Displacement.”

Gibbs Ph.D. Candidate Publishes Research on Housing and Women’s Care Roles During COVID-19

Salma Akter Surma, a Ph.D. candidate at Gibbs College has co-authored a study published in the Journal of Urban Management. The research investigates the experiences of women in urban informal settlements of Khulna, Bangladesh, during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on how housing infrastructure influenced caregiving responsibilities.

OU Institute for Quality Communities Hosts Route 66 Placemaking Retreat

The OU Institute for Quality Communities recently hosted a Route 66 Placemaking Retreat in collaboration with the OU Arts and Humanities Forum. The retreat was funded by an Oklahoma Humanities “Community Discussions” grant that an interdisciplinary OU team received in November. This retreat built upon the team’s site visits and community discussions in several historic towns along Route 66.

Each year, the OU Graduate College sponsors this event to offer graduate students and postdocs from all disciplines the opportunity to exhibit their research.

Institute for Quality Communities Westville Project Awarded TSET Grant

The community of Westville, Oklahoma was recently awarded a Built Environment Grant from the Tobacco Settlement Endowment Trust to continue implementing a plan developed by OU’s Institute for Quality Communities. With the designs provided by the OU team, Westville city officials hope to enhance the town’s streetscapes and improve overall community connectivity.

OU Architecture Faculty Co-Organizing “International Conference on Heritage and Affect” in Fall 2023

The International Conference of Heritage and Affect, co-organized by Angela Person (associate professor of Architecture, University of Oklahoma) and Jacque Micieli-Voutsinas (assistant professor of Museum Studies, University of Florida), will take place online in late November and early December 2023. The conference brings together dozens of leading scholars from around the world to explore the affective, visceral, and more-than-representational atmospheres of heritage landscapes.

Gibbs Ph.D. Student Presents at International Geographic Union Conference

Third-year Ph.D. student Felipe Flores was recently invited to speak at the Thematic Conference of the International Geographic Union. The conference took place in Mexico City from Aug. 18-25 and featured various sub-thematic sessions, speakers, excursions and workshops. Flores participated in the panel “Local and Urban Governance: lessons from the past and perspectives for resilient and sustainable development in a time of global emergencies and transitions.”

Gibbs Ph.D. Student Completes Summer Internship at DLZ Corporation

This summer, third-year Ph.D. student Felipe Flores served as an architectural associate at DLZ Corporation. DLZ is one of the leading consulting firms within the realms of architecture, engineering and surveying. It currently occupies the 139th spot on Engineering-News Record’s esteemed list of the Top 500 Design Firms in the United States. Additionally, it stands as the 11th largest firm in the Midwest, boasting a workforce of over 800 individuals spread across 29 offices.

Institute for Quality Communities Westville Project Moves Forward

In collaboration with design and engineering firm Kimley-Horn, the town of Westville, Oklahoma, recently began developing a project created by a team of students from the Institute for Quality Communities. The team’s design concepts have been incorporated into the final plan for a downtown lot and will soon become a reality.

Gibbs Ph.D. Student Awarded Center for Peace and Development Fellowship

Salma Akter Surma, a Ph.D. student in Planning, Design and Construction, was recently awarded the Security in Context Research Fellowship from the OU Center for Peace and Development. During her fellowship, Akter will research how trauma-informed care approaches can be applied in the planning and design process of child-friendly built environments in the refugee context.

Gibbs College, in partnership with its OU Institute for Quality Communities, is announcing a leadership transition. Shane Hampton has stepped down from the role of executive director of the Institute for Quality Communities, effective Aug. 25. The IQC team will continue to lead programs and projects in the 2023 – 2024 academic year.

Gibbs College PhD student Felipe Flores was recently honored with the University of Oklahoma Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in the “Humanities and Fine Arts” category. The Graduate Teaching Assistant Award recognizes and rewards outstanding performance by graduate students in both the “Humanities and Fine Arts” and “Science and Engineering” categories.

OU Landscape Architecture Instructor Awarded Funding for Research Project

The OU Data Institute for Societal Challenges has awarded $2,410.95 in seed money to support a research team that includes Shu Sun, an instructor and Ph.D. student in the Division of Landscape Architecture. The team is conducting the project “Urban Landscape: Eco-social interactions and park configurations influencing human exposure to ticks in Oklahoma City.”

OU Eco-Sooners Team Selected as 2023 Solar Decathlon Finalists

A team of Gibbs students was recently selected as a finalist for the 2023 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition that has inspired thousands of students worldwide to enter the clean energy workforce since its inception in 2002. This competition challenges student teams to create innovative building designs that address real-world issues, including climate change, environmental justice, and affordability.

Ph.D. student Zhina Rashidzadeh, and her faculty advisor Dr. Negar Heidari Matin, an Assistant Professor of Interior Design, recently published a paper in the Sustainability journal. Sustainability is a peer-reviewed journal published by the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute.

PhD Student Receives ARCC King Medal

Felipe Flores, a PhD Student in Planning, Design, and Construction under the advisement of Dr. Angela Person, was recently awarded the Architectural Research Centers Consortium’s (ARCC) 2022 King Medal for the University of Oklahoma. The King Medal, named in honor of the late Jonathan King, is awarded to one student per ARCC member institution. Recipients are selected at the discretion of member institutions based on criteria that acknowledges innovation, integrity, and scholarship in architectural and/or environmental design research.

Construction Science Team Presents Research at ASC Conference

Emad Najmi Sarooghi, a Ph.D. student in the Haskell and Irene Lemon Division of Construction Science, and Dr. Tamera McCuen, a Professor of Construction Science, recently presented their research on smart cities’ strategies for contractors at the 58th Annual International Associated Schools of Construction Conference in Atlanta, Georgia.
