Harvey Pratt—Marine Corps veteran and member of the Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes of Oklahoma—unanimously beat out five other finalists and won an international contest for the design of the National Native American Veterans Memorial. Out of the five finalists, the judges selected Pratt’s “Warriors’ Circle of Honor” for the Memorial, which breaks ground in Washington D.C. on September 21, 2019. The Gibbs College of Architecture’s own dean and professor of architecture, Hans E. Butzer, was part of the team that helped Pratt finalize his design after it made the final round of selection. Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture professor and Institute for Quality Communities Director Dr. Amber N. Wiley’s book, Model Schools in the Model City: Race, Planning, and Education in the Nation’s Capital, has received two major honors from the Urban History Association.
Research initiated by Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture alumna Naila Hasan during her master’s studies at the University of Oklahoma has continued through faculty collaboration and resulted in a peer-reviewed publication in HERD: Health Environments Research & Design Journal.
