‘Reimagining a Jail for Oklahoma City’ (ARCH4970/5970) will be offered as a dream course during the Fall 2020 semester at GCA. Taught by architecture professor Marjorie Callahan AIA, LEEP AP, the course will explore topics such as ways to reduce cycles of intergenerational incarceration, the specific design challenges related to women’s incarceration in Oklahoma, and more.
‘Reimagining a Jail for Oklahoma City’ is an interdisciplinary course that brings together the fields of architecture, journalism and social work. The course will allow students to explore how Oklahoma’s women inmates currently experience prison environs without their children in order to inform design guidelines for women’s prisons, which they will present to community stakeholders in Oklahoma, including the Oklahoma Department of Corrections at the end of the semester. Throughout the semester, students will also hear from guest speakers about their knowledge in the field of carceral studies.

Wiley, Ph.D., associate professor in the Division of Planning, Landscape Architecture and Design and director of the Institute for Quality Communities, has received national recognition for her book Model Schools in the Model City. The book has been named a finalist for the 2026 the PROSE Awards.
Gibbs College of Architecture Regional + City Planning Professor of Practice Vanessa Morrison and Associate Professor of Architecture Deborah Richards’ Open Design Collective received top honors at the inaugural BlackSpace Urbanist Collective Studio KIN Pitch Night Competition, held last month in Brooklyn, New York City.
