Gibbs College of Architecture is proud to announce that the University of Oklahoma Office of the Vice President for Research and Partnerships has awarded $30,052 through the Strategic Equipment Investment Program (SEIP) to support the launch of the Mobile Urban Design Unit (MUDU). This new resource will allow OU teams to bring high-quality tools for research and community engagement directly into towns and neighborhoods across Oklahoma.
Senior Interior Design student, Jada Higgins, has achieved a remarkable milestone by winning the IIDA Excellence Award at the Texas-Oklahoma Chapter’s annual awards ceremony held on Friday, November 7th in Austin, Texas.
Fifth year architecture student, Benjamin Jawad, won an AIA Dallas Student Design award for his project 8209 Park Lane. The project was developed in the Design 7 course under the direction of Amy Leveno. The competition allowed entries from current architecture students from Texas and Oklahoma, both from the undergraduate and graduate level.

20 students in the Gibbs College of Architecture’s American School Design+Build (ASDB) program, including 13 architecture students, 6 construction science students and 1 environmental design student, are partnering this semester with WildCare Oklahoma, and together they have been named one of five North American finalists for the Land Rover Defender Service Awards. The honor carries the opportunity for a $30,000 grant, with funding supported by Chase and other high-profile sponsors, including Disney. Public voting is now open through October 19, 2025, to determine the winner of the Animal, Wildlife & Marine Welfare Award.

The Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture is pleased to share that Frank Hicks, a graduate student in the Division of Planning, Landscape Architecture and Design, has been selected for the Landscape Architecture Foundation’s (LAF) Ignite Program. Ignite is a national, multi-year program that provides participants with a $10,000 annual scholarship, paid summer internships, and one-on-one professional mentorship.
Telesis, a journal produced by students and faculty in the University of Oklahoma Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture, has earned first-place with the 2025 Douglas Haskell Award for Student Journals for its sixth volume, “The Essence.”

Interior Design Director Elizabeth Pober was recently honored with the prestigious Logan Award during the 2025 Oklahoma Interior Design Awards, a fundraiser and celebration organized by the Oklahoma Interior Design Coalition. The Logan award is only presented when the selection committee determines that there is a recipient who has profoundly impacted interior design in Oklahoma.
Architecture alumnus Gary Armbruster, AIA, has recently been honored with three prestigious awards recognizing his outstanding contributions to the field of architecture and educational planning.
Two students from the Gibbs College of Architecture, Cole Burris and Leandra LeForce, were recently named Mr. and Miss Indigenous OU. The titles were awarded as part of the annual Mr. and Miss Indigenous OU competition, a campus-wide event that celebrates Native culture, identity, and leadership.

This competitive fellowship, awarded by the OU Graduate College, supports outstanding doctoral candidates in the final stages of their dissertation research.
Lahari Peluri, an alumna of OU’s Master of Urban Design program, recently contributed to a project that was honored with the prestigious Vernon Deines Award by the American Planning Association’s Small Town and Rural Planning Division. The Stephenville 2050 Comprehensive Plan, envisions a more resilient, community-driven future for the City of Stephenville, Texas, and stands out as a model for small-town planning nationwide.

Davis Furniture proudly announces its recent sponsorship of the Furniture Design-Build Studio at the University of Oklahoma, a hands-on course inspiring the next generation of designers through experimental learning. Held during the Fall 2024 semester at the University’s Gibbs College of Architecture, the studio brought together 17 senior Interior Design students who designed, constructed, and showcased original furniture pieces.

Unearthed Practice, a design studio founded by Robert L. Wesley Teaching Fellow Christopher Loofs and designer Jordan Loofs, has won 2nd place in the prestigious Tree House 2024 Design Competition organized by Volume Zero. Their project, “Forest Spirit,” was selected for its innovative approach to designing a tree house that meets the competition’s requirements of a compact 300-square-foot structure with multifunctional spaces for living, working, and relaxation.
Petya Stefanoff, a Ph.D. student in OU’s Planning, Design and Construction degree program, has been honored with the Annual Outstanding Plan Award by the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Planning Association, alongside her teammates.
Doyle Phillips, Associate Professor in the Haskell & Irene Lemon Construction Science Division at the Christopher C. Tahsin Tabassum, a second-year student at OU’s master’s program in Regional and City Planning, has been honored with the Ed McClure Award for Best Master’s Student Paper by the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP). Her paper, titled “Exploring Transportation Justice and Equity through the Transportation Justice Threshold Index Framework in Municipalities of Oklahoma County, Oklahoma,” was recognized for its innovative approach to addressing transportation equity. Her paper was developed as part of a project for her “Transportation Geography and Planning” course.

Iman Moradi Naftchali, a student in the Master of Landscape Architecture program, was recently honored with a Merit Award from the Central States chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Moradi received this award for “Bud to Bloom,” a revitalization project he completed as part of his master’s studio course with Abdulmueen Bogis.
Matt Reyes, associate professor of Construction Science, was recently recognized at the 60th Annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) International Conference. Reyes received the 2024 ASC Regional Outstanding Educator Award, which recognizes the top educator in ASC Region V.
Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture Dean Hans Butzer and his partner, Torrey A. Butzer, recently received the Mayor’s Award for Distinguished Service from OKC Beautiful, recognizing the Butzers’ visionary architectural designs that have influenced many of Oklahoma City’s buildings and landmarks.

An interdisciplinary team of Gibbs graduate students recently competed in the TEXO Foundation Region 5 Student Competition in Hurst, Texas. The team of six competed in the Design-Build division in the Graduate category and won second place with their design proposal.

OU Architecture alumni Wister Wu was recently honored with the Global Human Settlements Award on Planning and Design at the annual Global Forum on Human Settlements conference in Dubai. The GFHS is a global non-profit organization that promotes sustainable cities and human settlements for all through their annual forum and other academic conferences.
OU Architecture alumni Khoi Nguyen and Julie Tran were recently awarded the Young Architects award and two Best of Design Awards from The Architect’s Newspaper. Their New York City-based design firm, Future Projects, received recognition for the projects Another Seedbed and Studio Loutsis.
Christopher Loofs and Jordan Loofs, faculty in the divisions of Architecture and Interior Design, were recently selected as winners of Warming Huts v.2024: An Arts + Architecture Competition on Ice, hosted by The Forks. Supported by the Manitoba Association of Architects, this annual competition combines world-class design and art with the famous winters of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Tiziana Proietti, assistant professor of Interior Design and Architecture and director of the interdisciplinary laboratory Sense|Base, recently presented her research at the 2023 Interior Design Educators Council Southwest Regional Conference. She was recognized with the Best Presentation award for her project, Vision Training for Designers.
A group of OU graduate Landscape Architecture students recently attended the 2023 National American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Conference in Minneapolis. This ASLA conference is the largest gathering of landscape architects and allied professionals in the world, bringing together attendees to learn, celebrate, build relationships and strengthen friendships within the professional community.
Allison Winn, a fourth-year Interior Design student from Elk Grove, California, was selected as Gibbs College’s Outstanding Senior for 2023. Every fall, the dean of each undergraduate college at OU selects one accomplished student to receive this Award of Merit.
Interior Design student Naila Hasan recently presented her research at the 2023 Interior Design Educators Council Southwest Regional Conference, where she received the award for Best Poster Presenter. Hasan presented the results from her recent study, The Relationship Between Natural Lighting and Biophilic Elements and Children’s Behaviors, co-authored by Yeji Yi, assistant professor of Interior Design.
Several students from OU’s Master of Landscape Architecture and Regional + City Planning programs recently received awards at the annual meeting of the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. Each year, the OKASLA hosts an annual conference to recognize exceptional ASLA members and their achievements and discuss relevant topics within the discipline.

The OU Carceral Studies Consortium recently announced the recipients of the Spring 2023 Community-Engaged Micro-Grants and Undergraduate Student Work Prizes. The Carceral Consortium offers two micro-grants of up to $500 to OU students, faculty and staff members to support research, mentorships and community engagement projects. Among this year’s grant recipients are Marjorie Callahan, a professor of architecture, and Kristi Saliba, an architecture student.
Gibbs College PhD student Felipe Flores was recently honored with the University of Oklahoma Graduate Teaching Assistant Award in the “Humanities and Fine Arts” category. The Graduate Teaching Assistant Award recognizes and rewards outstanding performance by graduate students in both the “Humanities and Fine Arts” and “Science and Engineering” categories.
The OU Eco-Sooners received an award at the final competition of the 2023 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. The team of Gibbs students won the Best Name of the Year award for their well-selected team name. According to the judges, the name strongly reflected the team’s design ideas and innovative strategies.
René Peralta, a lecturer in Architecture at OU and alumnus of the Master’s of Science in Planning, Design and Construction program (Dec. 2022 graduate), was recently awarded the 2022-2023 Architectural Research Centers Consortium’s King Medal.
OU architecture alumna Breah Page was recently awarded the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Dubin Family Young Architect Award. The AIA is a professional organization for architects that works to improve the architecture industry through education, government advocacy and community outreach.
OU Construction Science Professor Bryan Bloom received the Provost’s Award for Outstanding Engaged Teaching. This award recognizes faculty that utilize innovative teaching techniques that promote community collaboration and high-quality, engaged learning.
Associate Professor of Interior Design Mia Kile received the Award for Excellence in Transdisciplinary, Convergent Research, which recognizes excellence in leadership in the creation of collaborative teams of recent faculty projects. Professor Kile and her team also received the Annual Award for Excellence in Research Grants, for acquiring over $1,000,000 in grants in 2022.
Dr. Tammy McCuen, Professor of Construction Science, received Provost’s Award for Outstanding Service, which recognizes excellence in OU-related outreach and service activities.
OU Interior Design student Riham Hamed was recently selected for the 2023 Metropolis Future100 program. Created by Metropolis Magazine, this program recognizes the top 100 architecture and interior design students in the United States and connects them with leading design firms.
Gibbs College PhD student Felipe Flores recently won the Midwestern Association of Graduate Schools (MAGS) Excellence in Teaching Award. MAGS is an organization of colleges and universities that works to advance graduate studies by improving program standards, sharing information, and encouraging research.
Dr. Tiziana Proietti, assistant professor of Architecture and Interior Design and director of the Sense|Base Laboratory at OU, is the recipient of a 2023 Junior Faculty Fellowship. Awarded by the Research Council of the Vice President for Research and Partnerships office at the University of Oklahoma, the program is designed to support tenure-track faculty establish their research and creative activities.
Vanessa Morrison, Associate Director of the Institute for Quality Communities, was recently selected for the 2023 cohort of the Place Based Justice Network’s BIPOC Leadership Collective. The Leadership Collective uplifts Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) leaders who work with place-based community engagement efforts on their campuses and in their communities.
A team of Gibbs students was recently selected as a finalist for the 2023 Solar Decathlon Design Challenge. The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon is a collegiate competition that has inspired thousands of students worldwide to enter the clean energy workforce since its inception in 2002. This competition challenges student teams to create innovative building designs that address real-world issues, including climate change, environmental justice, and affordability.
The Fall 2022 OU Architecture Design Awards were recently announced, with seven students receiving recognition for their outstanding work. There are two categories of awards: the Fall 2022 Design V GH2 Design Studio Prize, and the Fall 2022 Design VII Award.
An integrated Design-Build team of OU students from Construction Science, Architecture, and Interior Design won 1st place at the TEXO Foundation | Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 5 student competition.
Each year, all students in the Gibbs College of Architecture are invited to participate in a cocktail napkin sketch contest. Presented by the Division of Architecture’s Professional Advisory Board, the cocktail napkin sketch contest gives students the opportunity to submit sketches on a 5”x5” white cocktail napkin to compete to win cash prizes. Three cash prizes — $750, $500, and $250 — were awarded to the top three entries, which were decided by a professional panel of jurors.
University of Oklahoma Architecture alumnus Asa Highsmith was recently recognized as an honoree in the Architectural League of New York’s 2023 Emerging Voices competition. The Emerging Voices program is an annual event that recognizes outstanding Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urban Design firms across North America.
Angela Person and Stephanie Pilat, faculty in the OU Division of Architecture, were recently announced as recipients of the 2023 Course Development Prize in Architecture, Climate Change, and Society. The prize is awarded by Columbia University’s Temple Hoyne Buell Center for the Study of American Architecture and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.
Deborah Richards and Angela Person, assistant professors of Architecture, were recently announced as recipients of the 2023 Journal of Architectural Education (JAE) Award for Design. The JAE Award was instituted in 1985 and is now given annually for outstanding peer-reviewed articles published in the Essay, Design, Narrative, and Image categories during the preceding academic year.
Associate Professor of Architecture Daniel Butko’s acoustic consulting work on the CO-OP Ramen House project in Bentonville, Arkansas, was recently recognized by the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Professor Butko worked alongside professionals from the award-winning firm Maron Blackwell Architects to complete the project.
The Center for Spatial Analysis recently hosted OU’s 2022 GIS Day, on November 16 in the Oklahoma Memorial Union, featuring a student poster competition with cash prizes giving attendees the opportunity to network with GIS professionals. Two of the undergraduate winners, Daniela Kosnacova and Luke Kerr, were advised by Gibbs College faculty members.
Regional and City Planning Alum Chris Bodzioch and his colleagues at the Oklahoma County Assessor’s Office recently won the 2022 Special Achievement in GIS (SAG) Award. The team received this award for their dedication to creating a transparent and accessible source of information for the public.
Interior Design Senior, Ava Moore, and Interior Design 2022 Graduate, Olivia Aasheim, recently received awards from the Oklahoma Interior Design Coalition’s (OIDC).
Construction Science student Piper Petree was selected as Gibbs College’s Outstanding Senior for 2022. Every Fall, the dean of each undergraduate college at OU selects one accomplished student to receive this Award of Merit.
C. Aujean Lee, an Assistant Professor of Regional and City Planning at OU, was awarded a Big XII Faculty Fellowship for Spring 2023.

Architecture students Hiroki Mishima and Quentin Puiseux recently produced a project, “Ranger Cabins” that designed modular housing for park rangers in national parks around the world. Their project was shortlisted in the 2nd Annual International Architecture Competition for Modular Homes. The competition, hosted by Buildner Architecture Competitions, asked participants to submit innovative design proposals for a modular home that can be constructed in any form in any location.
Felipe Flores, a PhD Student in Planning, Design, and Construction under the advisement of Dr. Angela Person, was recently awarded the Architectural Research Centers Consortium’s (ARCC) 2022 King Medal for the University of Oklahoma. The King Medal, named in honor of the late Jonathan King, is awarded to one student per ARCC member institution. Recipients are selected at the discretion of member institutions based on criteria that acknowledges innovation, integrity, and scholarship in architectural and/or environmental design research.
Amy Leveno, Assistant Professor of Architecture, and Mark Leveno, Adjunct Faculty Member, were recently awarded an AIA Dallas Unbuilt Design Award for their firm OFFICIAL’s Granger Annex Adaptive Reuse Project. The AIA Dallas Unbuilt Design Awards are organized by the American Institute of Architects Dallas Design Awards Committee, whose purpose is to recognize outstanding work by local architects and honor the collaborative efforts of architects, clients, and consultants who achieve design excellence. The Unbuilt Design Awards showcase progressive ideas and dynamic design solutions.
Khoi Hoang, an alumnus of the Interior Design program, was recently recognized as one of the 2022 American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) Ones to Watch Scholars. The Ones to Watch program honors underrepresented members of the interior design community. As part of ASID’s dedication to the advancement of diversity and inclusion in the interior design profession, the Ones to Watch initiative supports and provides opportunities to rising leaders.

The Design-Build Institute of America’s Southwest Region (DBIA-SW) recently awarded support to Ethan Watson, a Construction Science student, and Dr. Tamera McCuen, Professor of Construction Science. These awards were the first of their kind to be awarded by the DBIA-SW.
Dr. Wenwen Cheng, assistant professor of Landscape Architecture, was recently awarded funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), to support her project titled “A Spatial Decision Support System for Identifying Heat Vulnerability Based on a Comprehensive Energy Budget Model and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis in Oklahoma City, OK,” with an amount of $149,163.
Dr. Sarah Little, an Associate Professor of Landscape Architecture, was recently recognized alongside her co-editors – Janet Loeback, Adina Cox, and Patsy Eubanks Owens – by the Environmental Design Research Association (EDRA) for their work on The Routledge Handbook of Designing Public Spaces for Young People: Process, Practices, and Policies for Youth Inclusion. The book was selected as the 2022 Honorable Mention of EDRA’s Place Book Award.
Five graduates from the Gibbs College of Architecture received Outstanding Academic Achievement Awards this April. This award recognizes the top grade point average for each undergraduate major.
Dr. C. Aujean Lee recently received a grant from the NYU Furman Center’s Housing Innovation in Small and Midsize Cities program for her research proposal, “Community Land Trusts in Welcoming Cities: Building Inclusive Housing Models for Immigrants.”
Dr. Tamera McCuen, Professor of Construction Science, was recently elected to the Associated Schools of Construction’s Board of Directors as the 2nd Vice President. The Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) represents over 150 Construction Management programs in the United States, Canada, and Europe.
The University of Oklahoma Carceral Studies Consortium is pleased to announce the 2022 Student Work Prize recipients. The prize recognizes excellence in scholarly or creative work from any discipline which engages carceral studies, broadly construed, during the 2021-2022 academic year. Congratulations, all!
The Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) awarded an Honorable Mention for the 2022 SAH Exhibition Catalogue Award to Renegades: Bruce Goff and the American School of Architecture. The Renegades book accompanied the “Renegades” exhibition held at the Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art in Spring 2020.
Architecture Graduate Teaching Assistant Donovan Linsey recently received the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award from the University of Oklahoma Graduate College.
Dr. Bryce Lowery, an associate professor in the Division of Regional + City Planning, is part of the University of Oklahoma Sewage Surveillance Team which recently received the Award for Excellence in Transdisciplinary, Convergent Research. This award was part of the 2022 Norman Campus Faculty Awards and Honors which were recognized during the Faculty Awards Luncheon on April 14th.
David Boeck, Associate Professor of Architecture, received the University of Oklahoma’s General Education Teaching Award. He was honored at the Faculty Awards Luncheon on April 14th for the award.
Camille Germany, Assistant to the Director of the Division of Architecture, has recently been awarded a University of Oklahoma Staff Senate Outstanding Performance Award as recognition for her outstanding job performance as well as her service and dedication to both Gibbs College and the University of Oklahoma.
