Fellowship for Global Engagement

Fellowship for Global Engagement

We are excited to offer a scholarship program available for incoming freshmen — the OU Global Engagement Fellowship. Coordinated by the Provost Office of Global Engagement, this program will ensure that students have the tools necessary to succeed in the global community.

About GEF

The Fellowship for Global Engagement is a program established by the University of Oklahoma to ensure its students have the tools to succeed in an increasingly global world. Global Engagement Fellows must commit to the program for the entirety of their undergraduate career. Fellows will receive a cash scholarship, which can be used during their undergraduate years for at least two international experiences, with their first experience ideally taking place during the summer after their freshman year. Fellows who successfully complete the requirements will receive a Certificate of Global Engagement, the only transcripted certificate at OU.

Global Engagement Fellows will not only study abroad, but will also:

  • Become proficient in one foreign language. Proficiency is satisfied by taking a minimum of 16 credit hours (2 years) of one foreign language - or by taking a relevant foreign language proficiency exam.
  • Participate in at least one international student organization.
  • Attend at least four international cultural programs or events each academic year.
  • Enroll in and complete the course entitled Understanding the Global Community (IAS 2003).
  • Participate in Global Engagement Fellowship meetings and events.
  • In consultation with the Global Engagement Fellowship advisor, explore the opportunity apply for a Fulbright grant.
  • Develop an e-portfolio that will document their international experiences on campus and overseas. Fellows will present their e-portfolios following their final international study experience at the Global Engagement Day event dedicated to the promotion of the Fellowship program.
  • Maintain a 2.8 minimum grade-point average.

If you have questions, please email jeanette.santibanez@ou.edu.

Incoming freshmen enrolling directly from an American high school are eligible to apply the spring before they attend OU. First generation students, underserved students, and those who have not had an international experience are especially encouraged to apply.

Certificate of Global Engagement

The Provost Office of Global Engagement is proud to announce its Global Engagement Undergraduate Certification program. Available to all degree-seeking students, the goal of the Global Engagement Certificate (GEC) is to recognize students who have taken tangible steps to become active global citizens by enhancing their knowledge of modern global issues and engaging with the global community both here in Norman and abroad.

The skills, knowledge and experiences evidencing "global engagement" are increasingly important for new graduates and in demand by employers. The transcripted certificate will provide OU graduates a concrete way in which to market their skills in any future academic or professional setting.

To receive the certificate, students need to fulfill the following requirements

Coursework

IAS 3910: International Studies Internship: Allows students to get up to three hours of academic credit for participating in an internationally focused internship, in the US or abroad

IAS 2003: Understanding the Global Community: This three credit hours course seeks to enhance students understanding of the global community and the impact of international relations on our lives and the lives of others around the world.

Education Abroad Program

Six to nine credit hours completed in an approved study abroad or international internship program.

Foreign Language

Three credit hours of a modern foreign language at the 2223 level (intermediate continued). If a student has already obtained this level of proficiency in a relevant language, they may substitute these credits with additional approved International and Areas Studies coursework or study abroad.

  • Encourages students to become globally engaged by helping them develop a critical understanding of the world beyond their immediate environment.
  • Enhances their knowledge of diverse cultures and contexts.
  • Provides them with the tools to communicate and interact effectively with people of different cultural backgrounds.
  • Develops their ability to operate at a professional level in different cultural and international settings.
  • Allows them to document their experiences and to receive recognition for it.
  • Provides them a tangible and formal way to communicate to future employers that they have completed a global curriculum education.

Current Global Engagement Fellows

The OU Global Engagement Fellows are required to maintain an e-portfolio (blog) documenting their experiences and reflections on their involvement with the global community at OU and their study abroad programs.
