Managing your OSCER Password
You can change or reset your OSCER password depending on your situation.
Note: All password changes must compy with the Password Policy.
Reset a Forgotten Password
If you have forgotten your password, you can reset it using the OSCER self-service website. This is the only available recovery method.
Using the OSCER Self-Service Website
- Visit https://account.oscer.ou.edu
- Enter your OSCER username and the email address associated with your OSCER account, then click Submit.
- If the information is correct, you will receive an email from support@oscer.ou.edu containing verification code .
- Copy the verification code from the email and paste it in the "Code from Email" field on the webpage.
- Enter a new password that meets the OSCER Password Policy.
- Click Submit to complete the reset.
- Wait at least 15 minutes for the new password to fully propagate across the supercomputer system before logging in.
Changing your password on OSCER Computers
1. Log into an OSCER system (see the Log Into OSCER Systems section for guidance).
2. At the Unix prompt, type passwd and press Enter.
3. When prompted, enter your current password and press Enter.
- No characters will be displayed as you type your password. This is expected.
4. Enter your new password and press Enter.
- Refer to the section below for password requirements.
5. Re-enter your password to confirm, then press Enter.
Note: Changing your password on any OSCER system will update it across all OSCER systems.
Password Policy
To comply with the University of Oklahoma's official password policy, all OSCER users will be required to change their passwords every 365 days from the last date of change.
Password Requirements
Passwords for OSCER accounts must meet the following requirements:
- Password is case sensitive.
- Must not include your name, username, or common words
- Must be at least 12 characters long.
- Cannot contain restricted terms such as "password" or "test".
- Must not include part of your name or user name.
- Must include at least three of the following character types:
- Uppercase (A-Z)
- Lowercase (a-z)
- Number (0-9)
- Symbol (!, #, $, etc.)
- Non-English characters not listed above
